    Not Content Podcast: Stand By Me (1986)

    Jerome and Brian continue their tribute to Rob Reiner with this dark, adventurous coming of age drama that has become a generational classic with audiences. Stand By Me (1986) is probably one of the standouts in terms of child actor performances as well directing an adaptation from Stephen King. The films has a dark quality to it, only to have gotten darker with the death of young actor River Phoenix in 1993. It's also an editing masterpiece as it's only 90 minutes and yet the film flows so smoothly, there are never any dull moments. It's a true classic. It's a seminal classic passed on from generation to generation. It may have minor flaws here and there, but the characters and chemistry are so good that it overcomes those things. Andre the Giant ties in the Right Match as they also watch the main event of Survivor Series 1987 with Team Hogan (Hulk Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, Ken Patera, Don Muraco, Paul Orndorff) vs. Team Andre (Andre the Giant, One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy, Butch Reed, Rick Rude). It's a fun match with a lot of historical significance (ask the Crockett family). This is one of those big movies that actually had a cult following after and actually made decent money when it first came out. However, because of the strike the script could not be changed or altered during production. Therefore, a lot of improv was involved but we end up with the memorable performance that Tom Hanks and the rest of the crazy cast give. Jerome is watching the film for the first time. It's a large cast with John Goodman taking the top billing but he's still able to make the role his own amongst a hodgepodge of different character types. It's a film about people watching movies during the Cuban Missile Crisis and even has a movie within a movie...you know gimmick. Both Jerome and Brian enjoy the film even though five year old Brian had no clue what was going on when first watching it in 1993.     "January With Joe Dante" continues with a film that Jerome never heard of until Brian told him about it a month ago. Brian has watched a few scenes from the "Innerspace" from 1987 but never the whole thing. Jerome was intrigued by the casting and ended up mostly positive on the film. Brian enjoys the technical aspects of the film which it richly deserves as this film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It has the usual Joe Dante players as well as some SCTV cameos to boot. It's a fun watch.     It's January and Brian has decided to make it "Joe Dante Month". Small Soldiers was on the list and a WARGAMES match just seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Both Jerome and Brian's favorite WARGAMES is of course Sting's Squadron vs. The Dangerous Alliance from Wrestle War 1992. It's a five star classic that is know as one of WCW's all time great matches. The chaos and anarchy of the match fit perfectly for the craziness that builds in Small Soldiers once "The Match Beyond" begins.     We lost the legendary actor Val Kilmer this year. He was a tremendous talent that quite frankly, never got his "just due". He was never nominated for a Golden Globe or an Oscar. It's a shame. Jerome and Brian decided to honor his legacy on his birthday, December 31st. First they took a look at his comedic/musician side with the Zucker Brother's film "Top Secret" from 1984. It's kind of the middle child of "Airplane!" and "Naked Gun". Then they take a look at one of his most iconic/quotable roles as Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" from 1993. A lot of people feel he was robbed of a nomination for it. They also talk about his legacy and other films of his they enjoyed over the years. Rest in Peace Val Kilmer, 1959-2025.
