AI's Impact on the Music Industry with John Wright

Hi friends — I took an unplanned break last week, but I’m so happy to be back in your inbox the week of Thanksgiving. Thank you for being here and reading this newsletter. A few weeks ago, I was reading one of my favorite newsletters, SNOBHOP, and came across an edition about AI’s impact on the music industry. It got me thinking—while AI seems to be everywhere lately, I’d never really considered what it means for music specifically. The implications are fascinating and complex, both challenging and full of possibility. That’s why I’m excited to share my conversation with John Wright of John Wright, where we dive deep into music, marketing, and the questions AI raises for the industry. We explore things like: How do you handle logistics and royalties when AI gives a song like “21 Questions” a sudden resurgence? What role does race play in AI-generated music? What does all of this mean for artists, fans, and the future of music? Clipse album rollout, and their well-deserved Grammy nominations, artists like LaRussell, and how they promote their music, and so much more. Please check out the interview on video, or listen to it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube Podcasts or Pocketcasts. Also, be sure to subscribe to SNOBHOP which drops every Friday. Here are a few things I thought were worth sharing this week: THINGS TO READ: Telisha “Nikki” Jones who created the viral AI artist, Xania Monet, just landed a 7-figure music contract. Also, watch her interview with Gayle King which connects to what John and I discuss. Heart the Lover by Lily King was as emotional as people said it would be. I cried so hard reading it on Sunday that I gave myself a mild headache and could not sleep. While it’s devastating, I really enjoyed the writing and recommend you read it. If you do and/or have, let me know your thoughts. I wrote this on here a few years ago, and someone read it over the weekend so sharing it here: Tips on how to be a better reader. I have new tips for this, so will probably update this in the coming weeks. Loved this piece from my friend Kristen L. Berry on what she’s willing to give up for her dream. If you have not, be sure to purchase her debut novel, We Don’t Talk About Carol. I dibble dabble in Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, so naturally, I was intrigued about this article about how a black ex-Mormon seeing Layla from the show brings up some things from her past. Please read this newsletter from Ava DuVernay. THINGS TO LISTEN TO: I have not stopped listening to “It Must Be Magic,” by Teena Marie. It both put, and kept me in a great mood these past few days, so you should listen to it too. I don’t think I’ve mentioned Summer Walker’s new album, Finally Over It, but I love it. Truthfully, while her personal life is a little wild, musically, Summer never lets me down. Also, loving the new Wale album and Odeal’s new EP. Enjoyed Reese Witherspoon’s interview with Emma Grede on the Aspire podcast. If you’re watching “The Morning Show,” let’s discuss. Also enjoyed both the Arianna Grande and June Squibb interviews on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast (which is maybe my favorite podcast right now). That’s it for this week, I’ll catch you next week. Also, if you enjoy this newsletter and want to support it, I’m offering 50% off annual subscriptions through the holidays. It would mean the world to me—like, actual tears of gratitude. No pressure, but if you’ve been thinking about it, now’s a good time. Okay, love you. Dishing on Books With Alexis Reliford

Hi friends — A few weeks ago, in my conversation with Isaiah Diaz-Mays I mentioned that one of my favorite things about writing a newsletter on Substack is the community you cultivate. And one person I’ve been in community with on the platform is Alexis Reliford who writes one of my favorite newsletters, “Feeling My Shelf.” In the newsletter, Alexis shares book recommendations for every kind of reader— someone who wants to read YA, someone who wants to read romance, or someone who wants to read about messy characters, just to name a few. Many of the recommendations Alexis made have made their way to either my TBR list or my favorites list, which is why I was so excited to speak with her about books and more. In this interview we discuss: * The origin story of her newsletter * How Alexis makes time for reading and her reading preferences * Her favorite books and the books she recommends to people * The complexity of messy characters e.g., Queenie from Candice Carty-Williams’ book and television show * Beyonce’s best music You can listen to the interview on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Pocketcasts. You can also watch the interview below: Also, Alexis’ birthday is later this week. Be sure to give her a shoutout and subscribe to her newsletter as well. Books mentioned during our conversation: * Misery by Stephen King * The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson * Jason and Kyra by Dana Davidson * Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams * Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering * Intercepted by Alexa Martin * Love You to Death by Christina Dotson * We Don’t Talk About Carol by Kristen L. Berry (listen to my interview w/Kristen here) * The Art of Vanishing by Morgan Pager * The Best Man by Malcolm D. Lee with Jayne Allen * The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy * Razorblade Tears by S.A Cosby A few reads for this week: * I am currently reading two books, The Wilderness (mentioned above) and Mood Music: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist by Liz Pelly. The Wilderness, I’m not sure about but Mood Music is very interesting. I’ll definitely be writing about it soon. * Truthfully, I miss Wendy Williams always. * “I always joke that I don’t dream of labor. … If people were truly passionate about their job, it wouldn’t pay anything. Passion is for your 5-to-9 after the 9-to-5.” via Fast Company * I can’t wait to read Lionel Richie’s memoir. This was a great read about how he mastered the love song. * The fight for the future of the WNBA. Step 1) Cathy has GOT to go. A few things to listen to this week: * Really enjoyed Lela Rochon’s interview on Lena Waithe’s “Legacy Talk” podcast. * Still have not stopped listening to Olivia Dean’s new album, The Art of Loving. Let’s talk about a beautiful album. * A listen/watch, Black Thought with Sean Evans on “One More Round.” * I have been listening to the new BOY SODA album, SOULSTAR and it’s a good time. Not to be confused with one of my favorite album intros from one of my favorite albums by Musiq Soulchild. * Not sure if I mentioned the new album from CARRTOONS in a previous newsletter, but this album is so good. That’s it for this week… kind of. I haven’t talked about productivity tools in a while, but did just want to say, I am no longer with Hobonichi for the upcoming year (say it like this) I am now with Sterling Ink. There are tons of writing pages which makes me very excited. Once it comes, I’ll share with you, but just flagging that I am already starting my birthday shopping (13 DAYS). Streaming, R&B, and more with Isaiah Diaz-Mays

Hi friends — One of my favorite things about writing a newsletter on Substack, is the community that you cultivate on Substack. There are so many talented creatives and writers on the platform, and one of my favorites is Isaiah Diaz-Mays. Isaiah writes one of my favorite newsletters, Echoes. In the newsletter, he writes about different topics around culture, literature, art, music, and even writes a short story series: “The Emancipation of Catalina De Valle,” which I love. I got a chance to speak with Isaiah about his newsletter, R&B music, the impact of streaming on the music industry and so much more. You can listen to the interview above, or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Pocket Casts. Additionally, you can watch the video below as well. Subscribe + Read Isaiah’s newsletter, Echoes. Also, I loved our conversation so much, I made a playlist with some of the music we mentioned during the conversation, which you can listen to here via Spotify. Here are a few reading and listening recommendations for the week as well. Last week was a mellow week in terms of reading. Instead of reading a book, I did read some pretty good articles which you should read: an interview with the Stud Budz, Tracee Ellis Ross and Anna Wintour. There are a few books out today that I am excited to check out: All the Way to The River: Love, Loss, and Liberation by Elizabeth Glibert, Hot Wax by M.L. Rio and Shot Ready by Stephen Curry. In terms of music, there were some pretty good releases but I got stuck on Elmiene’s new mixtape, Heat the Streets. Elmiene is like the internet cousin. We saw him pop-up during the pandemic on social media doing different covers so seeing him blossom and get exposure warms my heart. I really enjoyed his new mixtape but have not stopped listening to “Different Too.” That song is a jam and truthfully, I felt like it was a song about me (lol, I don’t know why I feel that way). Also, I went to see Love, Brooklyn, over the weekend and I suggest it. I’m still making my way through Highest 2 Lowest, but I got overly caught up watching Top Chef. Anywho, that’s it for this week. Catch you next week! Get full access to Notes from Erin at notesfromerin.substack.com/subscribe
