AZ State Rep Brian Garcia

State Representative Brian Garcia, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, shares his background and success in becoming an elected member of the Arizona State House of Representatives from legislative district #8. This district includes the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community. Currently, there are very few Native American members of the Arizona State Legislature. However, Representative Garcia’s knowledge and work with tribal communities give him a unique insight on how to bring tribal priorities to his work on policy issues at the legislature.

47 Years of the Indian Child Welfare Act

Forty-seven years since the enactment of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in 1978 the law has stood the test of time. Following the forced removal Native children from their families and communities at rates as high as 35% the goal of the law is to create standards for child custody cases involving Native children that prioritizes their best interest of strengthening family and tribal stability. The podcast features a conversation with Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Councilmember Mikah Carlos. She has been active in child welfare issues, has testified before Congress, and is a board member of the National Indian Child Welfare Association (NICWA). The discussion features: • The history of ICWA. • The experience and implementation in the SRPMIC. • Legal challenges to the law that culminated in a case that was decided by the United States Supreme Court. • Recent Congressional action. • The future of ICWA.

Kids Voting program. A pathway to building a well-educated voter base in the Salt River-Pima Maricopa Indian Community

The National Public Radio recently highlighted the “Kids Voting” program at the Salt River Elementary Schools. The program has been implemented into the schools’ curriculum to educate kids on the history and importance in exercising their civic duty to vote. SRPMIC Young River People’s Council and voting perspectives

Voting is a right for all U.S. Citizens. For Native American voters in Arizona there have been, and continue to be, many challenges to have full access to be able to vote. Elections matter and the voice and vote of young people is becoming an important demographic to understand for all candidates running for elected office. Episode six features a discussion with two members of the Young River People’s Council, the youth council for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Marley Dallas, 16 and Amelia Lasiloo, 13 are not yet of age to vote but share their views and their role in why voting is important in the upcoming Presidential election.

Maricopa County Recorder Democratic Candidate, Tim Stringham

County Recorders in each of the 15 counties in Arizona play a pivotal role in the administration of elections. For Maricopa County, the largest county by population, it has been in the center of controversy in recent elections over the integrity of its voting systems. The County is also represented by four tribal communities; the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, part of the Gila River Indian Community, and part of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
