The People Will Win: Keeping Myanmar’s Fight for Democracy Alive (Feat. Journalist Adam Bemma and a Member of the Myanmar Diaspora)

The military coup in Myanmar once captured international attention, but the spotlight has faded. For those living through it, though, the story never stopped. In February 2021, Myanmar’s military seized power in a violent coup that drew widespread global condemnation, for a time. Since then, thousands have died and millions have been displaced. Journalists have been arrested, media organizations forced into exile, and press freedom extinguished. Resistance groups have taken up arms in a fractured but determined struggle. And inside the country, courageous citizen journalists continue to report the truth, often at great personal risk, so the world will not forget.  In a world where headlines shift by the hour and global focus jumps from one crisis to the next, some stories risk disappearing entirely. But for the people of Myanmar, the crisis remains real and ongoing. In this episode of Oh! I Didn’t Know That, Canadian journalist Adam Bemma, who works for the exiled broadcaster Democratic Voice of Burma and a member of the Myanmar diaspora living in Taiwan, reflect on what life was like before the coup, how the crackdown unfolded, and how press freedom collapsed. They speak about the rise of citizen journalism, the bravery of those still reporting, and the resilience of a people refusing to give up on democracy, both inside the country and beyond its borders.
