    Dorottya Zurbó & Arun Bhattarai on Exploring Bhutan's Gross National Happiness in "Agent of Happiness"

    In this episode, I talk with directors Arun Bhattarai and Dorottya Zurbó about their new film “Agent of Happiness” that premiered earlier in the year at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. This film explores if and how happiness can be measured? The country of Bhutan invented Gross National Happiness to do just that, and Amber, the central protagonist in the film, is one of the agents who travels door to door to meet people and measure how happy they really are. He is still living with his elderly mother at the age of 40, but is nevertheless a hopeless romantic who dreams of finding love: a happiness agent who is in search of his own happiness. We embark with Amber on a cross-country road trip meeting citizens from all walks of life, reminding us of the fragility and beauty of our own happiness - no matter where we live.     Dan Covert on Directing the SXSW Award-Winning Film "Drawing a Life"

    In this episode, I talk with artist and director Dan Covert, about his new documentary film “Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life” that recently premiered at SXSW, picking up an Audience Award, and is about to be released on VOD. "Drawing a Life" is a poetic and intimate portrait of an artist. In an era dominated by influencers and social media, Geoff McFetridge works to live with intention and authenticity, an increasingly rare practice–more relevant now than ever.     Xinyan Yu & Max Duncan on Directing "Made in Ethiopia"

    In this episode, I talk to filmmakers Xinyan Yu and Max Duncan about the challenges of production of their excellent new film "Made in Ethiopia", that just received its premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. "Made in Ethiopia" examines the growing industrialization taking place in present-day Ethiopia and China’s often misunderstood, growing impact in Africa. Filmed over four years with unprecedented access, the story takes viewers to a dusty farming town in Ethiopia as a Chinese industrial park begins to take shape. The film follows three women, perhaps most affected: the Chinese factory director who must muster up strength to fulfill the promise of expansion and 30,000 jobs, a factory worker, and a local farmer, all who look to the success of the development for their future prosperity.     Arata Mori & Andreas Hartmann on Documenting the Japanese Phenomenon of "Johatsu"

    In this episode, I talk with filmmakers Arata Mori and Andreas Hartmann about their new documentary “Johatsu” that is currently on the festival circuit. Every year, thousands of people vanish without a trace in Japan. The film explorers the phenomena known as Johatsu, or “the evaporated,” about people who abandon their lives for various reasons, a troublesome relationship, mounting debts or threats from the mafia. Some get support from so-called “night moving” companies, which help people to disappear and start a new life somewhere else. The film “Johatsu” depicts the inner conflicts and attempts at reconciliation of those who have disappeared and those who have been left behind. Thank you for listening. The film explores Wisconsin Dells - the world capital of water parks - through the eyes of foreign students employed on summer work visas. This program, presented as an immersion into American culture, is also a way of profiting from cheap labour.     Michael Pessah on the Art and Practice of Cinematography

    In this first episode of season 3, I talk with renowned cinematographer Michael Marius Pessah, who has worked on a wide array of documentary and scripted projects, as well as music videos and commercials. For this episode, we focus on the art of documentary cinematography. Michael has worked on documentaries such as 'Scandalous' which was nominated for a 2021 Emmy, and 'Viva La Causa' which was shortlisted for a 2009 Academy Award. Michael was invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers in 2020 and is member of the National Film Preservation Board. As well as extensive work in the film industry, Michael also teaches cinematography at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, California.  Thank you for listening.
