A New Rule for Precious Metals

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/IWytSHrQfAE In this episode, Craig and Caleb kick off a new series on how Jesus raises the bar of God’s law in a way that exposes our sin and drives us to Christ for grace and mercy. They compare the Golden Rule’s “equivalency” standard from Leviticus with Jesus’ “as I have loved you” standard, then walk through the Upper Room in John 13 to show how Christ calls his people to self-sacrificial love, empowered by the promised Holy Spirit in John 14. Faith Alone

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/F4eZjjiueuw In this episode, Jeff and Craig revisit justification by faith alone and explain why James and Paul are not contradicting each other. Using Abraham as the key example, they distinguish God’s legal declaration of righteousness credited by faith from the outward evidence of living faith that produces works, and they close by grounding the order of salvation in Ephesians 2. Interpreting Scripture: Understanding Negatives

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/7BeP8APC1m0 In this episode, Jeff and Craig continue their series on sound interpretation principles by looking at how the Bible uses negatives. They explain how some questions function as emphatic denials and how simple negatives often imply a strong positive. Through examples from Job and Matthew, they show why slowing down to notice a single word like not can completely change the meaning of a passage and guard us from drawing the opposite conclusion of what the text teaches. They also discuss the difference between God revealing true knowledge of Himself and our inability to comprehend Him exhaustively, along with how Christ’s gentle care for the weak is expressed through a negative statement. Scripture mentioned: Job 11:7 – https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/job/11/7/s_447007 “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?” Matthew 12:18–20 – https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/mat/12/18-20/s_941018 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldring wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory.” Links: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@OnTheLanePodcast?sub_confirmation=1 Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-7820594 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7GbmsVVjTryD5F0pAaNaKc Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-the-lane/id1805279371 Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church: https://www.carriagelanepres.com/ Sermon Livestreams: https://www.youtube.com/@CLPCWorship/streams

Avoiding Misleading by the Mere Sound of Words

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/hDSsXn_HQwo In this episode, Jeff and Craig continue their series on biblical interpretation by addressing how readers can be misled by the mere sound of a word. Using examples like “perfect,” “blameless,” and “righteous,” they show how the same English word can carry different meanings depending on context and translation. The episode emphasizes careful study, attention to theological vocabulary, and avoiding rigid assumptions about familiar terms. Scripture mentioned: Job 1:1 (KJV) - https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/job/1/1/s_437001 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. Job 1:1 (ESV) - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/job/1/1/s_437001 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. Matthew 5:48 (KJV) - https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/mat/5/48/s_934048 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Genesis 6:9 (KJV) - https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/gen/6/9/s_6009 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. Genesis 6:9 (ESV) - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/gen/6/9/s_6009 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. Romans 3:9–12 (ESV) - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/rom/3/9-12/s_1049009 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Other sources: Knowing Scripture: R.C. Resolving Seeming Contradictions in Scripture

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/JwSnWMBKh6s In this episode, Jeff and Craig explain how passages that appear to contradict each other are resolved through careful attention to word usage, translation, and context. Focusing on Scripture that speaks about temptation and testing, they show how the same English word can be used in different senses without creating conflict. The discussion reinforces confidence in the unity and truthfulness of God’s Word. Scripture mentioned: James 1:13 (KJV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/jas/1/13/s_1147013 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. Genesis 22:1 (KJV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/gen/22/1/s_22001 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. James 1:13 (ESV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/jas/1/13/s_1147013 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. Genesis 22:1 (ESV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/gen/22/1/s_22001 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Matthew 4:1 (ESV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/mat/4/1/s_933001 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. James 1:14–15 (ESV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/jas/1/14-15/s_1147014 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV) https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/1co/10/13/s_1072013 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Avoiding Literalism in Scripture

Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9GvfhEKZMq4 In this episode, Jeff and Craig discuss how to interpret passages where the Bible uses hyperbole and exaggeration. They explain why rigid literalism can distort meaning, how Scripture uses figurative language to emphasize truth, and how context helps readers distinguish between hyperbole and historical or miraculous events. Biblical examples include Jesus’ teachings, Old Testament descriptions, and symbolic numbers. Scripture mentioned: Deuteronomy 1:28 - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/deu/1/28/s_154028 Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.”’ Psalm 107:26 - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/psa/107/26/s_585026 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; Joshua 11:4 - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/jos/11/4/s_198004 And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. Judges 7:12 - https://www.blueletterbible.org/esv/jdg/7/12/s_218012 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance.
