Once Upon a Rosie

Rose Lauer

Hi, I'm Rosie, an artist, educator, and lifelong fairytale fiend. From a very young age I've been hooked on stories- some of my earliest memories are of walking with my grandfather and listening to him spin the most incredible yarns- it was pure magic. Since then I've studied literature, theater, art and illustration in hopes of becoming a better storyteller. Every person who tells a story puts their own spin on it- do you remember learning the difference between Disney's Cinderella and the version by the Brother's Grimm? When my grandfather left me his collection of fairytales and fables it seemed like a good time to revisit those familiar stories as they were recorded. As he shared them with me, I will share them with you- starting with some classic collections and seeing where the journey takes us. This way lies adventure.

S2E19: The Little Soldier, Part 1-4 (Green Fairy Book) **Please use your own judgement before sharing these stories with children. Although I do my best to keep the language friendly, the content may not be everyone's cup of tea.   Summary A soldier returning from war happens upon an old castle. Inside he finds a serpent with the face of a woman. She tells him that her name is Ludovine, her father is the king of the Low Countries, and that she has been waiting for him to rescue her. She instructs him on what to do, and once she is free, tells him to get some rest and meet her with her carriage the following day.  Varying circumstances cause the soldier to miss the meeting time over a series of days. After missing his last opportunity to join her, he follows the carriage until he reaches the sea and can go no further.  There, he tells his woes to a young fisher girl who loans him her mantle and bag of coins.  Wishing desperately to be with Ludovine, the mantle transports the soldier to the Low Countries. Realizing the power of the objects in his possession, he hatches a plan to catch the princess's attention, and begins setting it in motion….   To be continued!   Questions or Comments?
