    “Mercy” by Duffy

In 2008, Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy looked ready to take over the world of music. Her Motown-inspired single “Mercy” was a huge hit all over the globe (with the notable exception of the United States.) Despite its moderate chart success in the US, the song was featured in movies, TV shows, and it even earned her a Grammy. Duffy’s momentum continued into her second album, and just when she seemed poised to NEVER be discussed on a podcast about one hit wonders, her career suddenly hit the brakes. Years later, she shared the harrowing story behind the reason for this, and a forthcoming documentary will shed even more light on her tragic story. Though we’ll undoubtedly learn so much more about Duffy once it’s released, we’re diving into her life, times, and soulful music this week on the show.  One Hit Thunder is brought to you by DistroKid, the ultimate partner for taking your music to the next level. Introducing Leila Hormozi: Feel Like You’re Working Hard but Not Getting Ahead? (Use THIS Simple Filter to Focus on What ACTUALLY Makes You Money) from On Purpose with Jay Shetty. Follow the show: On Purpose with Jay Shetty We spend so much time waiting to feel ready, not realizing that confidence only comes after we begin. Today, Jay sits down with Leila Hormozi to explore what truly drives success, not just in business but in becoming the person who can sustain it. What emerges is a powerful shift in perspective. Confidence is not something you chase, it is something you earn through competence. Leila shares candid stories from her early struggles with insecurity, rejection, and self-doubt, revealing that real growth begins the moment you stop waiting to feel ready and start taking action anyway. Together, they unpack a hard truth. The path to confidence is built through failure, humility, and the willingness to be seen as “bad” before becoming great. The conversation moves beyond mindset into the mechanics of success, including discipline, leadership, and emotional resilience. Leila reframes discipline not as a personality trait, but as a system you design within your environment, making the right actions easier and the wrong ones harder. Leila also challenges the belief that strategy or market conditions determine success. Instead, she emphasizes that the real differentiator is your ability to manage your mind and emotions under pressure. Through stories of entrepreneurs who lost everything, not because of poor tactics, but because they could not stay grounded, she highlights that inner stability is the true foundation of long-term success. In this episode you'll learn: How to Build Confidence Through Competence How to Take Action Before You Feel Ready How to Turn Rejection Into Growth How to Stay Disciplined Using Simple Systems How to Manage Your Emotions Under Pressure How to Lean Into Discomfort How to Create Consistency That Drives Results How to Lead People Without Losing Trust How to Build a Successful Business Without Losing Your Values How to Focus on What Truly Moves You Forward You don’t need to have everything figured out to move forward, you just need to be willing to start where you are. Growth isn’t about feeling confident every step of the way; it’s about showing up even when you’re unsure, uncomfortable, or afraid. “How Do You Talk to an Angel” by The Heights (f/ Jim Logrando and Trisha Novy)

The Heights was a short-lived TV show about a diverse seven-piece band that aired on Fox in the early 90s. Each episode ended with a music video that kinda encapsulated the whole episode, and at the end of the pilot episode, a young actor named Jamie Walters sung a song so powerful that it would be the end of the road for, well, “End of the Road” from Boyz II Men’s epic 13 week run at #1 on the Hot 100. “How Do You Talk to an Angel” would then become the show’s theme song by the third episode, and this fictional band was topping the charts. Funny enough, the show is called The Heights, and the band lives in an undisclosed place called “The Heights”, but they never actually say that it’s the band’s name on the show. It’s unclear if the band even had a name. It didn’t matter. Despite the song’s massive success, the show was canceled after 13 episodes, and we’re left to wonder how many more hits the show could’ve spawned if Aaron Spelling hadn’t given up on it. This week, we’re joined by the married couple of Jim Logrando and Trisha Novy to decide if there were even MORE heights that could’ve been reached if this television band could’ve gotten that Season 2 renewal. “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” by Blu Cantrell

In the Summer of 2001, Blu Cantrell looked poised to become the next household name in mainstream R&B. Her debut single “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” was topping charts and earning her Grammy nominations, and industry titans such as L.A. Reid and Dallas Austin were singing her praises and putting their talents to work to further her career. When she released her sophomore album in 2003, she achieved some international success, but things seemed to stall out back in the States. Within a year or so, Blu’s music career seemed to have abruptly ended, fueling speculation of all sorts. Was her departure from the limelight just another age old story of bad timing and record label shenanigans, or was something MUCH more scandalous at play? This week, we explore Blu Cantrell’s life and career to try to find out if she was one of SOMEBODY’S 99 problems.  One Hit Thunder is brought to you by DistroKid, the ultimate partner for taking your music to the next level.
