Building a small studio without a formula with Katie Cadwell

Two years into running her own studio, Katie Cadwell will happily tell you there's still no system — and that's rather the point. She's built Lucky Dip on a simple belief: you can do great work, have a good time doing it, and grow entirely on your own terms. Katie is the co-founder and creative director of branding studio Lucky Dip, and the founder of the NDA podcast. Fresh off her first OFFF Festival in Barcelona — where she reckons she learnt more standing at the bar than sitting in the talks — she joins Jack to talk honestly about what the early years of a studio actually feel like, from starting out as employee number one at someone else's studio to taking the leap into founding her own. Wobbly Paths Build Better Creatives, with Eve Macdonald

"A wobbly career path can build better creatives." Eve Macdonald makes the case that coming from the "wrong" background isn't a setback — it's the thing that makes you better at the job. Eve graduated with a degree in fine art and history of art, landed in a PR agency as a social media exec, and was running full campaigns by the end of her first week. From there she moved fluidly across PR, marketing and advertising into brand, and now sits in a role she effectively built for herself at KISS Branding in Leeds — part creative strategy, part business growth. Alongside the day job she runs Pencil It In, a community calendar connecting creatives across Leeds and Manchester. Creativity Isn't About Drawing with Lee Weaver

Lee is the co-founder of OneMay, a brand design studio in Liverpool making what they call "unfair advantages for ambitious brands." Showing Up With Nothing To Show with Laura Palmer

When anyone can push a button and get something that looks good, what's actually left that matters? For Laura Palmer, it's the idea — and the slow, unglamorous, occasionally frustrating process of getting there. A senior digital designer now freelancing, Laura came into design sideways. She studied art history at Leeds, where the assumed path led toward the art market and internships at the big auction houses — a future she knew wasn't hers. She'd been teaching herself After Effects and Illustrator making posters for a DJ friend, and a Shillington course during lockdown turned that instinct into a career: an internship within months, and years of studio and agency work since. The conversation gets into the pull between efficiency and craft — where AI tools genuinely help, and where reaching for a shortcut robs you of the satisfaction of learning something the hard way. What AI Can't Generate is Taste with Studio AntiGravity's Jordan Yates & Rachel Cook

AI can generate a logo in seconds. What it can't generate is taste — and for Jordan Yates and Rachel Cook, that's exactly why bold, considered design matters more now than it ever has. Jordan is the founder and creative director of Studio AntiGravity; Rachel is its studio director. Married, Manchester-based, and four or five months into running the studio in its current form, they trace the honest, slightly messy work of turning one person's seven-year freelance practice into a proper studio — pulling every process "out of Jordan's head" and building something that can stand on its own.
