    In 2012, California Fair and Inclusive Education Act required the state’s schools to incorporate LGBTQ+ history and related topics into grades 2, 4, 5, 8, and 11. The textbooks for this curriculum were only recently published and many of the state’s school districts have yet to train teachers on how to implement this curriculum. This month, we talk with Julz Goff, program manager, and Jorge Reyes, communications director, from Equality California about their recent”report card” on California’s schools and how they are doing complying with the many laws protecting LGBTQ+ students.     This month we will host an Outbeat Extra edition of Outbeat News In Depth featuring a tribute to Ted Olson, one of the two attorneys who took on Proposition 8 and restored marriage equality here in California. Mr. Olson passed away in November. We will air an interview we did with him in 2014 along with his colleague David Boise.  Join us at 8PM on December 29, 2024, only on KRCB Radio. Ted Olson and David Boise lead the legal fight to defeat Proposition 8, passed by voters in 2008, that limited marriage to one man and one woman. A federal court order restored marriage equality to California in 2023. California voters removed Proposition 8’s discriminatory language from the California Constitution in 2024.     2024 marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This is the law that expanded federal hate crimes law to include sexual orientation and gender identity. It is also the last year of the annual Matthew Shepard Foundation gala. Over the years we have shared moments from a number of these annual events and this month we bring you highlights from the last one held this October in Denver, Colorado with comments from Judy Shepard and honorees John Berry and Kal Penn.     This month we are celebrating Cleve Jones and his 70th birthday! Cleve is an amazing champion and activist for the LGBTQ+ community. He arrived in San Francisco in the early 1970’s and worked for Harvey Milk. Cleve’s achievements are to long to list on this page, so on our next show we will ask him to talk about 7 of the most significant events or achievements of his life and who are some of the people who helped him along the way. To commemorate his 70th birthday, Cleve Jones is throwing a big party on Friday, October 11, 2024, to celebrate his community and benefit organizations that serve it. This event is the launch of fundraising efforts for the new Cleve Jones Community Fund. The money raised by this party will support two organizations that Cleve founded or co-founded and will be administered by the Horizons Foundation.  The AIDS Memorial Quilt humanizes the AIDS crisis and shares the story of AIDS to provide a widespread understanding of the devastation caused by AIDS and the lack of response to it. The San Francisco AIDS Foundation provides essential services for people with HIV/AIDS, with a mission to end the AIDS epidemic.
