“I strongly believe that we are all born explorers. In the sense that when you're one year old you learn how to walk, you walk out of the house, and you start to wonder what's hidden between yourself and the horizon. And soon you will start to wonder, what's even beyond your horizon? So this spirit of exploration, that's something we all have. I kept it more than most people, but it never goes away. We all have it to a certain degree. Being an explorer is not something you begin being, but something you slowly stop being. You still have it until you die.” – Erling Kagge
In this episode of Outliers, I talk with famous Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge about his record setting expeditions and the importance of exploration in life. He’s the first person to complete the infamous Three Poles Challenge on foot by making it to the North Pole, South Pole, and Summit of Mount Everest. We discuss his philosophy on the importance of silence and walking, and a few of his favorite books (including how a classic like Frankenstein can be relevant to technology today).

“What is this thing we call technology? In the cosmological sense, like, where does it fit in? How does it relate to life? And my current summary would be that it is an extension of life and therefore is not contrary to life. It's an extended version of life—and that gives me hope, because it means that we can always make a greener version of whatever we make.” – Kevin Kelly
In this episode of Outliers, I’m talking with Kevin Kelly (@kevin2kelly) of WIRED magazine and Recomendo fame about his perspective on technology and its evolution. We discuss AI, AR, and how humans can benefit from partnering with and embracing tech.

Paula Faris: The Emmy-Nominated Journalist on Fear, Faith, and Finding Your Calling

“I believe everything happens for a reason. I don't have any regrets, even though I've done some stupid stuff in my life—like, really dumb things. I wouldn't take it back, because I learned more from my flaws and failures than I have from the “successes” of life. Those have been the character builders.” – Paula Faris
In this episode of Outliers, I’m talking with Paula Faris (@paulafaris) about leaving prominent television host roles at the height of her career to find her strengths, her vocational calling, and her true self. Paula shares a few of her favorite books and what to ask yourself when searching for your vocational calling (just three simple questions).

Mark Sisson of Primal Blueprint: Ancestral Health and Building a $200-Million Health Brand

    POPULAR ⭐️
“I was really interested in achieving good health along with performance, and I sacrificed my health in the name of performance. So I wondered if there was a way in which we could kind of have both—that I could be strong and lean and fit and happy and healthy and productive and shiny and sparkly and all the things that people want, without all of this pain and suffering and sacrifice.” — Mark Sisson
On this episode of Outliers, I’m talking with Mark Sisson (@Mark_Sisson) about his transition from a focus on pure performance to one on holistic health, and how he built a $200-million dollar disruptive health food brand that has captured the recent wave of paleo, primal, and ancestral health.
Mark dives into his daily choices, activity, and meals (hint: he loves grass-fed steak).

“I do believe that if you want to level up your leadership skills, if you want to contribute at a higher level... everybody should have some form of assistance.” — Casey Putschoegl
In this episode of Outliers, I’m talking with Casey about how she’s built a successful executive assistant agency with a focus on quality relationships, a rigorous selection process, and true partnerships between assistants and executives. Her insights on self-reflection and honest feedback are incredibly applicable to leaders from all walks of life.

Carey Smith of Big Ass Fans: Lessons Learned Building a $500M Business

“I think humor is incredibly important, and I think it’s important even in industrial sales—and people don’t make enough use of it.” — Carey Smith
In this episode of Outliers, I catch up with Carey Smith, a brilliant entrepreneur who founded Big Ass Fans and grew it from $0 to $500 million in the span of 20 years. We discuss:

What Carey learned from his first business venture (which actually flopped).

The evolution of Big Ass Fans, how the company got its name and why it worked.

The importance of creating a company culture that puts both employees and customers first.

Why it’s not enough to just have an idea or even a solution when starting a business.

This is an empowering conversation packed with advice for entrepreneurs and business owners — and it proves nice guys can, in fact, finish first.
