How to save a life when the system fails: from El Salvador to Ukraine

This episode is a little different from my usual interviews, where I speak with a teenager from a war-affected country. Instead, this is a trilateral conversation with Lars Peter Nissen and Ross Skowronski, where the three of us take turns in asking and answering questions. We decided to come together because each of us is involved, in different ways, in humanitarian aid and support for people affected by war. Lars is a humanitarian who has worked with many NGOs over the years, primarily the Red Cross, and is now the CEO of ACAPS, an independent analysis provider that helps humanitarian workers, advocates, fundraisers, and donors make better-informed decisions and respond more effectively to crises. Ross is a Ukrainian raised in Spain who arrived in Ukraine in January 2022 and chose to stay after the full-scale invasion began. He went on to found the NGO Mission Kharkiv, which now focuses mainly on supporting cancer patients in Ukraine. In this episode, we discuss how Mission Kharkiv was created and how it functions today, how witnessing the war in El Salvador inspired Lars to become a humanitarian, what works and what does not work in the humanitarian system, why I started this podcast, and how war shapes the way teenagers see the world. Episode 100: echoes of war across time and space

Over the Globe has reached 100 episodes. To mark this milestone, I’m taking a step back to reflect on the first 99 and trace the common threads running through these stories. What challenges do people in the countries I’ve covered face most often? How do they cope? What makes them stay, what pushes them to leave, and what brings some of them back? This solo episode brings together recurring themes from dozens of teens and adults living through war and displacement, with clips from past episodes to bring those themes to life. I created it to offer a wider lens on what it means to grow up in conflict-affected places - beyond single stories and headlines. And if a voice you hear resonates with you, I invite you to explore the earlier episodes where their full story is told.
