Through the Generations: Reckoning with Curses and Blessings

Have you ever read Exodus 20 — the part in the Ten Commandments about God punishing children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generation — and thought, That's not fair? You're not alone. In this episode, come and reckon with this passage of Scripture, that we might find the Father's good face even when it might initially feel hard to see. In this conversation, you'll discover: Why this passage made far more sense to ancient ears than it does to ours — and what our hyper-independent culture has caused us to miss about how deeply we are made to affect one another The "rocks in the pack" framework — a powerful, practical picture for understanding how generational sin travels, and how your faithfulness today lightens the load for descendants you'll never meet The two choices we face when Scripture doesn't feel fair — and which one leads to deeper faith instead of slow drift Why God is never less than fully just and fully merciful at the same time, and how the cross makes that gloriously clear What it looks like to move from victim posture to Ebenezer — from that was done to me to look at what God has done Whether you're carrying wounds from someone else's sin, wrestling with a text that troubles you, or simply hungry to live a life that echoes into eternity — this episode is for you. Key Takeaway: Your choices — today, in the ordinary, in the little — are echoing into generations 30,000 years from now. Let that call you higher. Let's Talk Coaching! Are you ready to close the gap between where you are and where you feel called to go? Renewing Our Minds by Rewiring Our Brains with Dr. Angela Deulen

Join Anna McLaughlin for a fascinating conversation with Dr. Angela Deulen that bridges cutting-edge neuroscience and timeless Biblical truth. Dr. Deulen, a professor of psychology at California Baptist University and licensed therapist, shares her unique journey from researching world religions as a teenager to discovering the historical foundation of Christianity. In this deeply insightful episode, discover how your brain is literally designed for sanctification and spiritual growth. Learn about the "God spot" in your brain, why emotions are a gift that keeps us close to the Father, and how practices like prayer and meditation physically change our neural pathways. Dr. Deulen explains the relationship between the limbic system and prefrontal cortex, revealing why we can't be emotional and reasonable at the same time—and how God positions Himself right at that intersection. Whether you're a mother struggling with anxiety, someone wrestling with unforgiveness, or simply curious about how faith and science beautifully align, this conversation offers both scientific understanding and spiritual encouragement. Discover why the simple act of going before the Father each morning isn't just spiritually powerful—it's neurologically transformative. Key Points Faith, Reason & the Brain — Christianity is intellectually strong; the brain's emotional and rational systems can't operate fully at the same time; prayer engages the "God spot." Emotional Processing — Suppressing emotions intensifies them; the Psalms model honest expression; Jesus Himself felt deeply. Anger, Unforgiveness & Brain Health — Unresolved anger turns into bitterness and damages the brain; forgiveness is a repeated, ongoing process. Relationships & Mirror Neurons — We subconsciously mirror others; parents' regulation shapes children; we can choose not to mirror toxic people. Stress, Spiritual Practices & Community — Chronic stress harms body and mind; spiritual disciplines regulate the nervous system; women need supportive community. Neuroplasticity, Sanctification & Boundaries — The brain rewires through repeated thought patterns; sanctification is gradual; boundaries protect energy and reflect Jesus' example. Scriptures Referenced Psalm 22 - "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" About this Episode Anna gets real about the gap between knowing what to do and actually being able to do it - the weariness, the interruptions, the life that just keeps happening. Drawing from Paul's final letter to Timothy, she speaks to three places we find ourselves when we need support, and shares an exciting announcement about one-on-one coaching. Key Points Three places we find ourselves when we're struggling: We don't know what to do — we're in the middle of the tangle and can't see the shape of it; we need an outside perspective We know what to do, but our hearts fail us — we need encouragement, someone to "hold our arms up" like Aaron and Hur did for Moses We just need someone to hold the space — something already happened, and we need a companion while we pick up the pieces Scriptures Mentioned 2 Timothy 4:9–22 — Paul's final plea to Timothy; "Do your best to come before winter" Matthew 25:23 — "Well done, good and faithful servant" Exodus 17 — Aaron and Hur holding up Moses' arms during battle Genesis 2:18 — "It is not good for man to be alone" Books & Resources Mentioned The Rabbit Listened** by Cori Doerrfeld** : https://a.co/d/05db8RlC - a picture book about how to truly be present with someone in grief Previous episode with Jody Snowden on grief - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULQZYqlybQs Free Resource: Ready to go from Overwhelmed to Overcomer? Stewardship: Why You're Actually Exhausted

In this episode, Anna wraps up her deep dive into the three core values of this podcast, courage, stewardship, and belonging by tackling what she believes is the most misunderstood of the three: stewardship. If you've been feeling tired, overwhelmed, or stretched too thin, Anna offers one powerful reframe that just might change everything. True stewardship isn't about doing more; it's about abiding first. When we get that order right, bearing fruit becomes not just possible, but inevitable. Key Takeaways Stewardship inverted is the root of overwhelm. Abiding must be proportional to the call. Every yes is a thousand no's. Check with the Lord, not just the people asking. The one-talent servant's real failure was his view of the master. The five- and two-talent servants acted immediately because they trusted their master. You have the Holy Spirit — listen to those inklings. Those most afraid of being indulgent are usually the least likely to be so. It starts and ends with how we see Him. You are not called to be weary — you are called to abide. Scriptures Referenced Joshua 1:9 — "Be strong and courageous" — Hebrew roots: chazaq (to fasten to, grab hold) and amatz (to be transformed by stepping forward) Matthew 25:14–30 — The Parable of the Talents — the central passage for this episode's teaching on stewardship John 15 — The Vine and the Branches — abiding as the source of all fruit-bearing (used as a closing benediction) Hebrews 11 — The Hall of Faith — Abraham looking forward to a city whose builder and foundation is the Lord "Through a glass dimly" (1 Corinthians 13:12) — the contrast between the partial revelation of the Old Testament and the fullness believers have today through the Holy Spirit Books & Resources Mentioned Jon Acuff — Author and speaker on business, faith, and working faithfully in your sphere. Referenced for his teaching on the power of no — how every yes forsakes everything else that could have filled that space.: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B002Q36ZTE/allbooks Michelle Nezat — Previous podcast Episode Loving the Ugly Bride: Navigating Church Hurt with Michelle Nezat: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/loving-the-ugly-bride-navigating-church-hurt-with/id1714745503?i=1000750486165  (Referenced for her concept of "costly hallelujahs" — small, sacrificial acts of love that honor the Lord and those He's placed in our lives.) Remember: You don't need to figure out what you'll take on a year from now. You just need to know today's yes and today's no. Enjoying the podcast? Deeply Rooted, Unshakeable STRENGTH: Lamenting Losses Well with Jodi Snowdon

In this deeply moving and hope-filled conversation, Anna sits down with author and speaker Jodi Snowdon to explore what it really looks like to walk through heartbreak with God — and come out stronger, deeper, and more rooted in faith. Drawing from her own journey through miscarriage, divorce, and the loss of a close friend to cancer, Jodi shares the powerful STRENGTH acrostic that God gave her as she healed — a framework that has become the foundation of her book Depth: Growing Through Heartbreak to Strength. Together, Anna and Jodi discuss how to lament honestly before God, how to navigate ongoing loss, what it means to allow yourself to grieve, and how God chisels our character through the hard places we never asked for. You'll hear stories of comfort, compassion, and God's surprising redemption — including tender accounts of friendship, parenting transitions, and the ministry God has brought out of Jodi's broken places. They also talk about how to support friends in grief, how to sit with others like "the rabbit who listens," and how your cracks may be the very places God is preparing to pour out hope to others. This is a conversation that will strengthen your faith, validate your pain, and gently lead you toward the God who meets us in the depths. Courage: We've Had It All Wrong

What does it really mean to be brave? In this episode, Anna unpacks a revelation about courage that transformed her understanding of one of her core values, and it all started with a deep dive into the Hebrew roots of Joshua 1:9. If you've ever felt like you just aren't gutsy enough, bold enough, or brave enough, this conversation is for you. Courage isn't a character trait you either have or don't;  it's something available to every believer, in every season, no matter how quiet or small your life may feel. Anna weaves together her three core themes - belonging, stewardship, and courage, showing how they are not separate callings but one unified life posture: being the branch, holding fast to the Vine. Whether you're in a season of intercession, grief, waiting, or bold action, this episode will reframe what bravery looks like in your everyday life. Key Points The Three Strands: Belonging, Stewardship, and Courage The Hebrew Roots of "Be Strong and Courageous" Courage Is Not a Character Trait — It's a Posture He Holds Us Even When We Can't Hold On The Greek Connection: Rest and Empowerment The One Work: Be the Branch What Courage Looks Like in Real Life Scriptures Referenced Joshua 1:9 — "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, for the Lord will be with you wherever you go." Deuteronomy (context) — Moses first spoke the charge to Joshua before his death — the same anthem the Lord then brings back in Joshua 1. John 15 — The Vine and the branch; the abiding posture that underlies all three core values. Matthew 25 — The Parable of the Talents; the foundation of the stewardship strand. 2 Corinthians 12:9–10 — "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness… when I am weak, then I am strong." Ephesians 6:10 — "Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power." Philippians 3 (ref.) — "I grab hold of that for which Christ Jesus held onto me" — the duality of holding on and being held. 2 Timothy 2:13 — "When we are faithless, He will remain faithful, because He cannot abandon Himself." Luke 6:38 — "Give, and it will be given to you — a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over…" Illustrating God's abundant sufficiency.   Books Mentioned Books The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes by Nancy Pearcey — Discusses the arc of masculinity in culture and how the Bible's definition of courage - https://a.co/d/06WpYH9g   The good news is — you're already brave. As you hold fast to the Lord and look full on His wonderful face, you're living out the call God first gave to Joshua all those years ago through Moses. Be strong and courageous. Fasten to Him. Be emboldened by Him. And do the dance again and again, every day, for the rest of your life. Go forth. Be brave. And remember — you've got this, because He's got you. Loving the Ugly Bride: Navigating Church Hurt with Michelle Nezat

In this deeply needed and tender conversation, Anna sits down with author, podcaster, and Bible teacher Michelle Nezat to talk about a topic many believers quietly carry: church hurt and spiritual abuse. With decades of experience studying Scripture, creating discipleship tools, and walking alongside the body of Christ, Michelle brings clarity, biblical grounding, and compassion to a conversation that is often confusing and isolating. Together, Anna and Michelle unpack the difference between being hurt at church and experiencing church hurt or spiritual abuse, why power and authority matter in that distinction, and how easy it is to get swept into a toxic bubble without even noticing. Michelle shares from her own current "wilderness season," as she and her family navigate healing, disorientation, and the slow, steady process of finding a healthy church home after deep hurt. If you've ever asked, "Am I crazy?" "How did this happen?" "Can I trust again?" "Where do I go from here?" this episode will breathe truth, comfort, and hope into your heart. Michelle reminds us that Jesus is not the one who hurt you, His Word can heal you, and His design for the Church is good—even when His people fall so painfully short. About

Do you have big dreams rooted in an even bigger God … but most days, those dreams seem impossibly far out of reach? Welcome to Overwhelmed to Overcomer podcast, where we unpack and celebrate the unique purpose the Lord has given each of us, and how we can walk it out more fully - with deeper JOY - today, right in the midst of the madness. Together, we will come to trust the Father's deep love for us and our incredible value as one of His children, called to steward well the gifts He's given us … we will unpack and walk out our own unique, God-given purpose … and we will encourage one another to operate in that purpose in our daily lives with courage, leaning into the support of fellow sojourners. In this podcast, you'll find practical, tactical steps; honest conversations; and my-heart-to-yours invitations to rest and receive at the feet of the God who sees you as you steward well His calling for your life. The Lord has called us to do a thing - and He'll not only equip us, but also fortify and fuel us along the way. So, let's dig into this conversation of belonging … purpose … and courage. Sweet friend, your. life. MATTERS. So, if you're here for this, I'm here for you! Let's do this thing. With clarity. With courage. With each other.
