My time in the psych ward

No one talks about what it’s actually like to go into a psychiatric ward. We're inviting you behind the curtain. What happens when you walk through the doors? What does it feel like? Who are you surrounded by? And what happens when you leave? For another solo ep, Georgia unpacks the truth about what it's really like in a psychiatric hospital. The more we talk about this stuff, the less frightening and shameful it becomes. Sometimes talking about the thing you’re most afraid to say out loud is part of what helps you survive it. *Content warning: This episode discusses extreme mental health crisis scenarios. Are Mum's Groups a Cult? w/ Jorjia Gillis

For today's episode, we're joined by proud Budawang & Yuin playwright Jorjia Gillis. We chat about the real life experiences that have inspired her new play Mum Club. We talk about becoming a mum, finding connection when you feel completely alone, and turning the weird, funny and often uncomfortable parts of motherhood into art. We get into birth trauma, mum competition, unsolicited advice, WhatsApp group politics, and why sometimes the only way through motherhood is to admit how f*****g absurd it all is. I had to make peace with dying w/ Varrsha

*Content warning: This episode contains discussions of traumatic pregnancy, emergency birth, medical trauma, pregnancy loss, and maternal mental health. Today Varrsha shares what it feels like to prepare for your own death while praying your baby gets to live. We chat about the trauma that continued long after birth, and how spirituality became the thread that carried her through. Georgia met Varrsha by chance at a market over the smell of incense, and within minutes they were talking about spirituality, motherhood and surviving the unimaginable. At 23, Varsha's pregnancy took a devastating turn. What began as a normal pregnancy quickly became a life-threatening battle with severe pre-eclampsia. She was repeatedly told she and her baby wouldn't survive. Doctors refused to treat her. She lost control over her own body, her own decisions, and even her own birth. We unpack: The reality of severe pre-eclampsia and maternal traumaBeing told you and your baby probably won't surviveLosing autonomy during pregnancySpirituality as an anchor through crisisBirth trauma and the emotional aftermathWhy emotional support can change everythingRaising a miracle baby after months of uncertaintyHealing from experiences that never really leave you SUPPORT RESOURCES: Emergency & Crisis Support If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 000.Lifeline Australia: Call 13 11 14 for crisis supportBeyond Blue Support Service: Call 1300 22 4636 or visit Beyond Blue for online chat and mental health resourcesheadspace: For young people aged 12 to 25. Pregnant and Agoraphobic

Content warning: This episode discusses extreme mental health crisis scenarios, as well as confronting themes around pregnancy. Give this one a miss if these are sensitive topics for you. This is the story of the year Georgia genuinely didn't think she was going to survive. The OCD. The insomnia. The darkest of thoughts. The relationship breaking points. The nervous breakdown. The guilt. The fear she was already failing her daughter before she'd even been born. If you're pregnant and going through it, if you're scared to have a baby because of your mental health, or you've ever wondered if you're the only one finding this unbelievably hard, we made this for you. Sometimes the most healing thing isn't advice. It's hearing someone say, "Me too." This is the most honest Georgia has ever been about pregnancy. She barely survived it, but this is also the beautiful story of how motherhood ended up saving her. Walking Until We're Not Strangers | Series | 01

When we say "people from all walks of life," we mean it. INTRODUCING our Not Strangers series. For this new format, we leave the studio and meet people the old-fashioned way, by walking up and saying hello. Jason, Mila, Marotetini, Dominic, and Mukesh. Five chance encounters that show just how quickly someone can stop feeling like a stranger. These episodes are recorded exactly as they happen, so you'll hear traffic, footsteps and all the little moments that come with being out in the real world. We're working towards minimising background noise moving forward, but wanted to test this first go without restriction. As always, this episode is also available as a YouTube video, where you can see all the action. One of today's beautiful interviewees was so insightful, we invited them to the studio for a full episode. You'll hear that full conversation next week.
