    EP 5: Gender, Mental Health, and Peace Processes inclusion in the UNPoA on Small Arms

    In this episode, the First openly gay member of Parliament in Asia from Nepal, Sunil Babu Pant (Spiritual Name: Anaagrik Kashyap) and NISEA Programmes Manager Mitzi Austero, with host Ida Scarpino (Political Affairs Officer of UNRCPD) delve into the inclusion of progressive language on gender perspectives, mental health, and peace agreements in the outcomes of Fourth Review Conference on the UNPoA (RevCon4). They discuss why Indigenous Peoples' inclusion remains a challenge and explore how civil society organizations (CSOs) can advocate for broader representation in peacebuilding, synergies, and intersectionality within the UNPoA framework. This episode is derived from a webinar and co-produced by IANSA, NISEA, and UNRCPD with support from UNSCAR.

    EP 4: Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technology, and Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems: Security, Moral, and Ethical Perspectives in Asia

    There is much to be said about Artificial Intelligence and emerging technology, but even as a lot of it is used for good, there are concerns of misusing or abusing AI and emerging technology in both explicit and implicit ways--even to the point of infringing on basic human rights. It is on this thought that authors’ thoughts and findings in the book Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technology, and Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems: Security, Moral, and Ethical Perspectives in Asia is discussed in this special episode of Peace Perspectives. Published by Nonviolence International Southeast Asia, this paper explores the need to expose how AI and emerging technologies have eventually led to advancements in weaponry. There is a growing concern on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems or LAWS, especially in countries with human rights and security issues. This is something that governments must address, not just in a legal and ethical way but also from a humanitarian perspective.  Mitzi Austero is the Programmes Manager of Nonviolence International Southeast Asia. Alfredo Ferrariz Lubang is the Regional Representative of Nonviolence International in Asia. Concurrently, he is the National Coordinator of the Philippine Campaign to Ban Landmines and convenor of a number of humanitarian disarmament campaigns. Binalakshmi “Bina” Nepram is an indigenous scholar and human rights defender, whose work focuses on deepening democracy and championing women-led peace, security, and disarmament in Manipur, Northeast India, and South Asia. Pauleen Gorospe Savage is the Policy and Research Advisor of Nonviolence International Southeast Asia. Kazuyo Tanaka is currently a lecturer at Nara Women's University Secondary School.     EP 3: Civil Society Perspectives on AI and Emerging Technologies

    AI has made a huge impact on our lives. But what are the limits of incorporating AI and emerging technologies into daily life? What are the concerns regarding the usage of AI in government and security? What are the concerns surrounding the use of AI in weapons systems? Is there potential for AI to cause more harm than good? What actions should we be taking to ensure that there is no abuse? In this episode, host Pauleen Gorospe Savage chats with Fred Lubang and Prabal Thapa about the various concerns surrounding AI’s gray areas, and the actions that sectors need to take in order to ensure that people are not negatively affected by it. Fred is the Regional representative of Nonviolence Southeast Asia, while Prabal is part of the Committee of Social Justice in Nepal.     How is the Artificial Intelligence race going in developing countries in Southeast Asia? How does the government ensure transparency and accountability to ensure citizens' rights and freedoms are not infringed upon? Is there gender inclusivity and representation in developing these AI systems?
