S1 Ep35 Dance Workshop (Reformulation: Why Dance?)

In this workshop, we explore the question “Why dance?” by deliberately moving away from movement and finding our way back to it through a chain of material transformations. Starting with five minutes of automatic writing, we select five words, translate them into everyday objects, compose those objects into a sculpture, transform that composition into bodily positions, draw those positions, invent and describe a creature from the drawing, create a costume for it, record a movement video, meditate with the image, and finally return to writing. Each step reformulates what came before into a different medium—without needing to know why or where the process is heading. Through this sequence, we explore what follows us between materials, what gets lost or carried across, and how dance can emerge through text, objects, drawing, fabric, sensation, and imagination. The workshop asks what happens when we stop looking for the next logical step and instead allow unexpected reformulations to guide the practice. Ultimately, it is an inquiry into the materiality of dance, expression, and the conceptual containers different forms create for us—and a playful attempt to discover why we return to dance at all. Reference: ♻ The Reformulation Handbook (2013) — Download Questions Explored: What is the materiality of dance if its expression can happen through so many different mediums? What stays with us when we reformulate something across different materials? How can unexpected reformulations free us from our own expectations? How do different forms, text, objects, drawings, costumes, act as containers for understanding our dance? What happens when we use scores and instructions to surprise ourselves rather than reach a predetermined result? Why do we return to dance at all?

A day in dance with PER SACKLÉN, Peter and Yari

A day in dance with PER SACKLÉN, Peter and Yari Dance Reflection is a weekly Friday podcast with Peter Mills and Yari Stilo, centred on conversation, shared practice, and taking time to look back in order to think forward. This guest series extends that reflection by inviting dance artists and practitioners to recount their yesterday, a day in their lives, tracing what they did from beginning to end. Through this simple structure, each episode opens a conversation into the textures and rhythms of living with dance. Across the course of a day, a wide range of activity comes into view: rehearsals, teaching, creating, resting, travelling, organising, or simply noticing. Moments that might otherwise seem peripheral become part of a broader understanding of practice, revealing how dance is carried, interrupted, adapted, or sustained. The day becomes a way of approaching larger questions: what it means to work with dance, how a practice continues over time, and how it moves through different contexts, demands, and conditions. Whether the day is full or uneventful, structured or improvised, it offers a situated perspective on a life in dance, where practice is not separate from daily life, but continuously shaped within it. You can find more about all of Per Sacklén’s work at: https://raserbyran.wordpress.com/. Dance Reflection sits alongside two other podcast series:PETER, dance with…, released every third Monday, where Peter invites a guest to dance one of their practices and reflect on it together; and DANCE WORKSHOP, released on the Mondays in between, a series of short audio workshops exploring dance through imagination, movement, and curiosity. S1 Ep34 Dance Workshop (Continuity: Staying With the Dance)

In this workshop, we explore continuity, specificity, and the conditions that allow a practice to develop. What does it mean to stay with something, to keep following a movement or idea, and to recognise a “red thread” through a practice? Through improvisation and reflection, we investigate going forward rather than simply staying still, and consider how contracts, environments, video, habits, and other conditions shape what becomes possible. The workshop then expands outward: what happens when we explore what isn't part of a work in order to understand what is? And when does exploration need to give way to practice? The final exercise asks you to practise within an imperfect or unexpected container, discovering what conditions are actually necessary for your practice to continue. How do we stay with something? What allows continuity to emerge? What is the “singular” or specific thing at the heart of a practice? What does it mean to go forward in movement? What happens when we reset? What contracts or conditions allow continuity to exist? What exists outside the regime or contract we create? How do we know what we like or want before we've tried it? What is gained by exploring what doesn't belong in a work? What other materials: lighting, costume, sound, atmosphere, architecture, etc. contribute to what a dance becomes? When does exploration become practice? When is something “enough”? What conditions does a practice actually need? Can specificity be found in an imperfect or unsuitable environment? What happens when we practise somewhere that isn't the ideal place to practise?
