    Ditch the GPA, Find Your Why: Our Students Need a Purpose, Not Just a Pedigree

    Are we raising successful students, or are we just raising efficient test-takers who are already burnt out by middle school? As a school psychologist, I am seeing a terrifying shift in our hallways: kids aren't just stressed; they are experiencing a profound crisis of meaning. We are hyper-focused on preparing them for exams and future careers, but we are completely forgetting to teach them how to actually build a life they love living. In this episode, we are throwing out the traditional school survival guide and introducing a transformational Japanese framework: Ikigai (your "reason for being"). Join me as we break down why our current school system is failing our kids, how a simple shift from "What do you want to major in?" to "What problems do you want to solve?" can change everything, and what it looks like to teach true purpose to a classroom of seven-year-olds. It’s time to stop waiting for our students to break before we give them the tools to thrive. It's time to stop focusing on turning our kids into highly decorated, purebred competitors (the pedigree) and instead focus on helping them find meaning and joy (their purpose).

    Should You Stay... or Start Applying Somewhere Else?

    Your first year as a school psychologist is supposed to challenge you... but how do you know whether you're experiencing a normal learning curve or working in an environment that's making it harder to grow? In this episode, I'm breaking down one of the most important conversations we don't have in graduate school - how to tell the difference between being new to the profession and being in a district that may not be the right fit. We'll talk about the green flags that often go unnoticed, the subtle warning signs that are easy to mistake for "just part of the struggle," and the questions I think every early career psych should be encouraged to ask themselves as they are beginnig to adjust into their roles as school psychologists. If you're a graduate student, intern, first-year school psychologist, or even a seasoned psych wondering whether your current district is helping you grow into the professional you want to become, this episode is for you. Lets be real.. the perfect district does not exist. And the goal is not to try and find a "perfect fit". Your goal is learning how to recognize an environment that supports your growth, values your professional judgment, and continuously invests toward enhancing your comptency as a school psychologist.

    A Student, A Snack, and Why the Internet Lost Its Mind

    A social media post about a student returning from the office with a snack sparked hundreds of comments and one massive debate... Are we helping students regulate, or are we rewarding bad behavior? This episode tackles one of the most uncomfortable questions in education. If consequences alone change behavior, why do so many students continue down the same path despite years of suspensions, detentions, office referrals, and punishments? We explore the importance of emotional regulation, accountability, intervention, and what could actually change a child's trajectory over time. Consequences matter. Accountability matters. But what happens when punishment becomes the entire intervention? Lets talk regulation, behavior change, emotional intelligence, and why teaching students the skills to navigate frustration, conflict, and adversity may be just as important as the consequences we give them.

    The Science of Praise - An effective practice and tool within our schools and classrooms

    Humans seem to be wired toward having a positive response when praised or given recognition for their hard work and accomplishments. Researchers have discovered that receiving praise releases dopamine in our brains, the same chemical that is unleashed when we experience other joyous moments such as eating our favorite dessert, engaging in a meditation, or even when we fall in love. Dopamine and it's feel good effect is what motivates us to keep engaging in these behaviors, as our mind and body crave to continuously experience the feelings of pleasure that results from the dopamine release. It is then no wonder that praise is a very simple yet effective practice that can be utilized to motivate and engage our students. In this episode we will take a deep dive into the reasons why students should not only be praised when they achieve the highest grade in the class, or score a seat in the honor roll, or win the spelling bee. But that they also need consistent praise and recognition for their effort, hard work, persistence, and dedication while they are striving to reach an academic or behavioral goal (s), despite possibly having failed a few times. In this way, praise, when utilized with good intention and integrity can be a powerful as well as effective tool to prepare our students for persevering through the challenges and failures they will inevitably face in life. The purpose of this episode is to help educators understand how praise may help our students adapt a growth mindset, build their resilience, while also cultivating feelings of trust and safety so that students can feel comfortable making mistakes. The goal is to give our students a solid understanding of how it is in the midst of failure as well as consistent trial and error that they will give birth to some of their biggest achievements in life. Additionally, this practice is a form of positive reinforcement/support. The power of PRAISE lies in empowering our students even as they are experiencing the productive struggle that is required of any human when they set out to achieve a particular goal.

    Internship Year

    In this episode we dive into the subject of internship year for School Psychologists. The episode begins with some key points regarding possible fears and false expectations you may have before going into internship year, or even your first official position as a licensed School Psychologist. I briefly touch on how you can manage/navigate through times where you may experience the aforementioned. Additionally, I talk about about some important experiences that you may include on your checklist when searching for an internship placement as well as other factors to possibly consider, which will ultimately make your resume stand out as well as get you in optimum gear to officially enter the field as a licensed school psychologist.

    In this episode I talk about some of the personal experiences that lead me to choose a career in the field of school psychology. Additionally, I briefly touch on my educational background. You will get to hear about an incredibly inspirational teacher that I was blessed enough to meet in middle school, whose voice and words became a sense of inner guidance and inspiration throughout my life. I also talk about some of the major challenges I experienced during my first official year as a licensed and practicing school psychologist. The episodes reaches its conclusion after I express what continues to keep me passionate and dedicated toward my career as a school psychologist.
