Episode 174: Live from Planet 8, It's Saturday Morning!

Recently we aired an encore presentation of our September 2019 show on Saturday morning cartoons. In that episode, we said that someday, we should discuss our favorite live-action Saturday morning shows. Well, that day is here! In this episode, each of us -Larry, Bob, and Karen - shares a favorite live-action show. We follow this up with a brief discussion of other shows we enjoyed.  Karen starts things off with 1976's Ark II, a postapocalyptic kids show, Bob follows with the well-known Land of the Lost, and Larry surprises us all by choosing The Bugaloos! There was something special about live-action shows. They seemed like "real" TV shows, but for kids. They often had protagonists about the same age as the viewers, so it was easy to insert oneself into the story. And most offered up a moral at the end. Did you enjoy live-action Saturday shows? Let us know which ones were your favorites. For our Sensor Sweep, Karen shares her Micronauts Time Traveler figure from Super 7. It's just like the ones she had as a wee child. Larry shows off his replica pistol from Blade Runner, sold by Paragon. It's incredibly detailed. Bob updated us on Godzillafest 2026: tickets are now available! The film festival will be held July 17-19 at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco, and the full-blown convention will occur September 18-20 at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway, also in San Francisco. Go to https://www.godzillafest.com/ for more information. Bob also shared a Godzilla popcorn bucket from the Alamo Drafthouse. Let's hear from you! Best of Planet 8: Saturday Morning Cartoons

You know what they say: life finds a way...to derail podcasts. Yes, we're afraid that due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be running an encore presentation of one of our early episodes, from September 2019, Saturday Morning Cartoons. Enjoy! Hey kids! Get up, grab your cereal bowl, and join the Planet 8 crew to watch your favorite Saturday morning cartoons! We'll reminisce today about not only our favorite cartoons, but those wonderful sugary cereals as well. Bob gives us the low down on Jonny Quest, the classic Hanna Barbera 1960s action adventure cartoon series. He'll talk about the characters, episodes, voice talent, and more. If you love Jonny Quest, you won't want to miss this. Karen looks at a non-Saturday morning cartoon: Justice League and Justice League Unlimited that ran on the Cartoon Network originally. She describes the set up for the show, how it changed when they went to Justice League Unlimited,  and the crew discusses what they loved about this iconic super-hero animated series. To wrap it up, Larry covers the sometimes-forgotten Star Trek series: Star Trek The Animated Series. Running in 1973 and 1974, the 22 episodes continued the original series five year voyage. We'll discuss the voice acting -by most of the original cast -and some of the more interesting stories. Let us know some of your favorite cartoons. What kept you glued to the tube as a youngster?   For our Sensor Sweep, Larry shares a book called Star Trek: The Guide to the Animated Series by Aaron Harvey and Rich Schepis. The book is full of photos of the script pages, sketches,  interviews with the writers, and just tons of information about the planning and development of the series. The Commander highly recommends it!   Facebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8Podcast Instagram:http://www.instagram.com/planet8podcast YouTube: https://youtube.com/Planet8podcast Yabba dabba doo!

    Episode 172: Best (?) Sci-Fi Films of the 70s

Once again, we're looking at a decade and the best science fiction films in it. However...we have already covered a LOT of 70s science fiction films. We've had whole episodes on Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Star Trek The Motion Picture, Logan's Run, Star Wars, Soylent Green, Omega Man, and many more. We didn't want to pick those films again. So the films we chose in this episode might not be the headliners, but we think they're still good films and representative of the 70s as a decade. We each chose two films to discuss. Bob: Deathrace 2000 (1975), Message from Space (1978) Larry: Terminal Man (1972), Time After Time (1979) Karen: Silent Running (1972), Westworld (1973)   The 70s were a great decade for science fiction, with dystopian thrillers, space operas, and even romantic adventures. The 70s might be the decade with the greatest variety of science fiction films. Whatever you want, you can find it there. We hope you find our selections entertaining.    For the Sensor Sweep, Bob has a genuine samurai sword that is a replica of one seen in Kill Bill, it ties into both of his film selections, as it was used by David Carradine in Kill Bill, and made by Sonny Chiba. Both of these actors are in the two films he selected! Karen shares about her upcoming episodes of her YouTube show, Echoes from the Satellite, which will include segments on the Killraven Marvel Comics from the 1970s. And Commander Larry shares a ginormous book, Valley of the Cliffhangers by Jack Mathis, which covers old serial films, as well as a poster of This Island Earth that he got from Jim Zippo, who can be found on Facebook. Let us know your favorite science fiction films from the 70s! Even if it's Sleeper!
