Welcome to the ‘Plant Based Eating Made Easy’ podcast. I’m your host, Anna - a master’s level plant-based Registered Dietitian and Transition Coach - with 20 years of dietetics experience. I’m also the Founder of PlantNourished and an award-winning recipe creator. I’ve watched friends and close loved ones suffer and families torn apart by health problems like sudden heart attacks and cancer. Diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple cancer diagnoses, and heart problems all run in my extended family. And having gone through my own plant-based diet transition feeling lost with no guidance or support, I know just HOW challenging this transition can be – especially if you’ve been used to a ‘meat and potatoes’ diet for most of your life. But through my transition experience, I’ve now developed a simpler and easier method to move to plant-based eating – one that I can’t wait to share with you!

    59 | Better Kidney Function & HbA1c on a Plant-Based Diet (and Pills Cut By 85%!) – Interview with Rhonda [Part 1] {Plant Based, Inflammation, Diabetes, Depression, Anxiety, Blood Sugars, Pain}

    What’s it like to have an autoimmune disease, resulting in borderline kidney failure and be on the verge of needing a kidney transplant? It must have been really scary to deal with. That’s what today’s guest Rhonda faced. She had just been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called IgA nephropathy which significantly impairs kidney function, and in her acute hospitalization, it was found that her Glomerular Filtration Rate (GRF) had already dropped to the super low level of 12. She was about to be put on the transplant list, but she wasn’t even 50 years old yet and still had a full life ahead of her, not to mention another grandchild on the way to love.
     
    Yet, following the advice of her kidney doctor, she decided to give plant-based eating a try…and what results she experienced within just 6 months of making this change! Hear about the health transformation Rhonda experienced in part 1 of this Guest Interview. Not only did her kidney function improve naturally, her HbA1c dropped drastically from 8.2 to 5.4, her mental health got better and she went way down in pills.     Have you ever heard of the saying that ‘a calorie IS a calorie’ and believed it? Perhaps you’ve tried very calorie-restricted diets in the past for this very reason. You know, the ones that have you count every single calorie eaten during the day and limit you to tiny portion sizes of certain foods. Sure, it works for a season, by reducing your total daily caloric intake, but constant macros and calorie counting becomes exhausting to keep up long-term.
     
    So, is it ALL about the calories, and should we just assume that all calories are equal? Not quite. There’s definitely more to this story and I want to tell you about it. Now I can wrap my head around WFPB eating!

I have mostly been eating whole food clean for about 20 years. For the last six years or so, I have had a predominantly keto diet. My health has still not been where I wanted it to be. Upon recent research, I decided to look into vegan eating. That's when I found Anna's podcast! I BINGE LISTENED to the first 54 podcasts in about 2 weeks! Let me tell you it is VERY difficult to change your mindset from high fat/moderate protein/very low carb to high protein & carb/low fat!
Hearing Anna has opened my perspective and changed my paradigm about eating grains, beans, & other healthy carbs. I've specifically learned that Whole Food Plant Based eating is not "just veganism".
Anna makes it all make sense in very practical, easy to digest ways! I love the simplicity of her podcasts and the recap & action steps at the end of each episode.
This podcast has been a great resource and I eagerly await each new weekly episode!
*One favorite tidbit: For me to adopt the mindset that my husband IS on this same journey- just at a different stage than me!
