    66: More Emotional Regulation Tools

Send us a text In this episode of the Playful Connection Podcast, Eddie Shin will share four simple and practical tips on more emotion regulation tools that you can apply with your children or teens. 1. Introduce (or Re-Introduce) Deep Breathing Techniques 2. Practice Healthy Distraction Techniques 3. Model Your Own Emotional Regulation 4. Teach the “Pause Button” Technique Think of emotional regulation as a toolbox. The more tools your child or teen has in their emotional regulation toolkit, the better equipped they are to navigate life’s ups and downs. Just like a mechanic uses different tools for different problems, your child will learn to select the right tool–whether it’s deep breathing exercises, identifying their emotions, or using a calming space–to address the challenges they face. Over time, as they become more skilled at using their emotional regulation tools, their confidence grows, and so does the strength of your relationship. Just as a well-maintained toolbox ensure smooth repairs, strong emotional regulation ensures smoother emotional connections between you and your child. 65: Developing a Stronger Emotional Vocabulary

Send us a text In this episode of the Playful Connection Podcast, Eddie Shin will share four practical ways to help your child or teen develop a stronger emotional vocabulary. 1. Model Emotional Language in Daily Life 2. Practice Naming Emotions in the Moment (with Co-Regulation) 3. Use “Emotion Check-ins” as a Daily Ritual 4. Pair Books and Media with Emotion Reflection Helping your child or teen develop emotional vocabulary is like giving them a fuller paint palette. Without the right words, they’re left painting their experiences with only black, white, and gray. But with every new emotion word they learn—like “disappointed,” “nervous,” “hopeful,” or “guilty”—they gain a new color to express their inner world. And when you sit beside them with your own palette, mixing and naming colors together, you create a masterpiece of connection and understanding that makes your relationship richer and more resilient. 64: Repairing Lost Trust

Send us a text In this episode of the Playful Connection Podcast, Eddie Shin will share four simple and practical tips on how to repair lost trust. 1. Acknowledge the Hurt Without Defensiveness 2. Follow Through on Small Commitments 3. Apologize Clearly and Sincerely 4. Ask What They Need to Rebuild Trust Repairing lost trust is like mending a cherished piece of pottery with gold—a Japanese practice known as kintsugi. Rather than discarding the broken bowl, the cracks are filled with something precious, making the item even more beautiful and strong than before. In relationships, those moments of rupture and repair—when handled with care—can become golden seams that hold your connection together with deeper understanding and grace. Your willingness to repair shows your child that love is durable, even in the face of imperfection. 62: Resilience Building Activities

Send us a text In this episode of the Playful Connection Podcast, Eddie Shin will share four simple and applicable activities that will build and strengthen resilience in children and teens. 1. “Challenge of the Week” Activity 2. Storytelling Through Difficult Moments 3. Emotion Regulation Through Art and Movement 4. Role-Play Resilience Scenarios Using resilience-building activities with children and teens is like weaving a strong net beneath them as they walk their own highwire. Each activity adds another thread—one for confidence, one for problem-solving, one for regulation, and another for connection. And while you can’t walk the wire for them, the net you’ve built together offers the assurance that when they wobble or fall, they’ll land in a space that’s safe, strong, and ready to lift them back up.
