The Vestey family has an amazing history. Starting from the docks of Liverpool in the 1890s they built a global empire. Egg processing in China. Cattle ranches in Australia and South America. And Dewhurst, at one time, the largest chain of butchers in Britain. Today the business is led by George Vestey. The fourth generation of the family. We talked to George about how he retains the strong sense of purpose that’s been instilled in the business over multiple generations.

All the while founders Jon Wilkin and Mark Flanagan have continued to play rugby league at the top of the professional game. We sat down for a coffee to talk about how finding their position unlocked their potential.

Tebay Services on the M6 has famously been described as the closest a motorway service area comes to Harrods Food Hall. It’s run by the Westmorland Family, who are also behind Gloucester Services on the M5. The current chair is Sarah Dunning, whose parents started the business in 1972 when the motorway was built through their hill farm. We were delighted that Sarah agreed to talk to us because the strength of Westmorland’s position has been crucial to their success.
