BONUS EPISODE: This Fandom Is A Monolith

We briefly return from our hiatus with an episode recorded last summer, all about Harry Potter Fandom: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Zoe and Adela reminisce about their first introductions to the books and to the fandom, online and offline. E remembers their view of this monolith of a fanbase from the sidelines, when internet culture in the 00s and 10s was saturated with Harry Potter references, theories, memes, and revelations. Zoe discusses types of fandoms from a scholarly lens and why the Harry Potter fandom was so transformative. For better or worse, HP fans shaped early internet culture. For better or worse, HP fans brought their obsession with the magical world into the real world. Let's talk about that.

BONUS EPISODE: It's Not A Swing Dress, It's A Watermelon

In which we watch and discuss the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire which, despite all of the negative shoutouts, we all quite enjoyed. Discussions include the much better handling of the Crouch/Moody mystery compared to the book, as well as the two genders: butterflies and staves. We would all also like to acknowledge that we completely forgot to talk about Draco at all, and we apologize.

34: A Minor Fudgery Of Space And Time

34: A Minor Fudgery Of Space And Time

Due to a technical issue we combined the last four chapters of HP 4! Hear E grumble about the second half of the climax, listen to Zoe get frustrated with Crouch’s Moody, and bask in Adela’s love for Fred and George. The book ends on the series’ first ever sad closing, but both we and Harry will preserve.

Send us your book 4 wrap up questions! Spoilers please send directly to Zoe or Adela or to our Tumblr, and feel free to send us questions about the book 4 movie as well!

Note: Adela had a couple audio issues throughout the episode, apologies!

CW: brief discussion of a dead body 38:40-39:45, brief mention of fetuses in anti-abortion ads 39:45-40:20.

In which we discuss the first half of the climax of Goblet of Fire, including the fridging of Cedric Diggory, an expository villain monologue that lasts five whole pages, and whether Voldy's cult is actually an MLM.

Engaging and Frustrating

Disclaimer: I am a lot farther along with processing and letting go of HP than the 2/3rds of the hosts. I am no longer a fan of anything Harry Potter and I don’t participate in the fandom.

I enjoy literary criticism, and this podcast offers thoughtful and perceptive deconstructions of various aspects of Harry Potter. E, as a first time reader, is especially clear-eyed and astute. I love their takes and perspective. They are what keeps me listening.

The other two hosts …. frustrate me. The show has made an editorial decision to avoid praising the author, which I appreciate, but as a result it’s often impossible to tell how or why Zoe or Adela like anything about the books. AT BEST their continuing fandom is incoherent, at worst, it often reads as an unstated defense of the trans misogyny, racism, etc. of the HP universe. Or like their beliefs against these things aren’t real, if they can identify and deconstruct them all and then enthusiastically adore something like book four?!?? it can be a bit triggering and tbh often leads me to set aside the pod, but the incisive e brings me back.

Nostalgia is a heck of a drug, I guess, but I wish the fan hosts could be more…honest? direct? about their feelings for this property. If they continue with book five, I would like zoe and adela to grapple more with how or why they continue to feel anything for the books, characters, and fandom.
