    The Preacher’s Final Words | Ecclesiastes 12:9-14

    Ecclesiastes is written by a “Preacher.” This Hebrew word, Qoheleth, pictures a speaker standing before an assembly to deliver an important message. The Qoheleth, King Solomon, was no ordinary preacher. He was the wisest man on earth. “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all other men.” After a life of successes and failures, Solomon leaves us the words he most wants us to remember: “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.” Take-Home Message: Obedience to God is everyone’s entire duty.     Rejoice, but Remember | Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8

    One key theme of Ecclesiastes is that life’s problems and pain should not stop us from enjoying life’s blessings. As followers of Jesus, we can be "sorrowful, yet always rejoicing." But Ecclesiastes teaches that the only way to have sustainable, true joy is by living within God’s boundaries. God’s Word is not a prison; it is a fence of protection against the devastating consequences of sin. King Solomon tells young people to enjoy the physical prime of life with all of the excitement and opportunities in front of them, but he warns them to remember that someday God will evaluate all of their deeds. He also tells us to remember God in the days of our youth rather than waiting until the pain and problems of old age seize us. One way the church can accomplish the task of remembering God is through ministries that include intergenerational fellowship. The old are reminded by the young to rejoice in life, and the young are reminded by the old to remember God. Take-Home Message: Enjoy life, but remember God. Rejoice!     God's Investment Advice | Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

    The Bible is a book that contains lessons for every area of life, including how we invest our money. God not only gave Solomon wisdom, He gave him more riches and possessions than any king before or after him (2 Chronicles 1:12). God used Solomon, the human author of Ecclesiastes, to teach us timeless lessons for how to view the financial markets. In a sinful and broken world, the stock market will remain volatile and uncertain. There is only one person who completely understands it, and that is God. He is the one we must turn to for the greatest investment advice. Take-Home Message: I must follow God’s investment advice, or I will pay the price. A Biblical Definition of Investment: The allocation of resources, whether time, money, or talents, with the expectation of a future return or benefit.     How to Not Ruin Your Life | Ecclesiastes 10:1-20

    There was a man who had so much promise. He came from a powerful, wealthy, and good looking family with parents who loved him. He was favored and put in a position of authority at a young age over a great kingdom. Most importantly, God greatly loved him. God gave him wisdom, wealth, and honor far beyond anyone of his time. God even appeared to him two times. God gave him everything, but this man ruined his life. He turned away from God until he nearly lost it all. This man’s name is Solomon, and he wrote us a book called Ecclesiastes to tell us, "Don't do what I did. Don't ruin your life." Take-Home Message: Wisdom keeps me from ruining my life.     Time and Chance | Ecclesiastes 9:11-18

    The more we try to control everything around us, the more out of control everything seems to become. That is because there is no escape from life’s sudden pressures and dangers. Our money, status, even wisdom and righteousness cannot insulate us from all the disasters that happen in the world. We only need to look back to 2020 to find an event that happened unexpectedly and forever changed our lives. Life’s unpredictability humbles us and forces us to acknowledge the limits of our own understanding. God uses time and chance to show us a better way forward than trusting ourselves: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 Take-Home Message: Time and chance redirect my trust. Time and Chance Explained (11-12) A Biblical Definition of Time and Chance: The unpredictable elements of life that happen to everyone, regardless of status, wisdom, or righteousness.     How to Live Like I'm Dying | Ecclesiastes 9:1-10

    Most people do not like to think about death, especially their own. Death makes us uncomfortable, and the thought of it seems to take the fun out of life. But there is great value in meditating on our death. It reminds us that we don’t have forever to do the things that really matter. One day, we will wake up and realize that we don’t have as much time as we thought. The sooner we come to that realization, the wiser we will live. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 Take-Home Message: Remembering my death results in a wiser life.     God and Government | Ecclesiastes 8:1-17

    One of the marks of our age is a rejection of authority. This rejection has led to a lack of respect for God and the government he appoints. Obedience to God and government, in that order, leads to great blessing. If we are to respect the authorities God places in our lives, we must start with a healthy respect for God Himself. To fear the Lord does not mean that a Christian lives in constant fear of punishment. Instead, it means to live with reverence, awe and respect for God. This leads to humility, obedience, confidence, trust, and security. Fear God, and you will have nothing else to fear. Unless the governments commands force us to disobey Gods commands, we should obey the government that God has appointed. This respect for government reflects our reverence for God Himself. “Be subject for the Lords sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” (1 Peter 2:13-17) Take Home Message: Obedience to authority leads to blessing and life.     Lessons on Wisdom: Part 2 | Ecclesiastes 7:15-29

    There are many ditches and potholes to be avoided on life’s path, and we are all prone to one or the other. Some live recklessly and die young, while others beat themselves up over things that are not even sin. There are also those who are experts at pointing out wrongs in others but never examine themselves. Solomon points out that the cause of all this is our sinful hearts: “See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.” Biblical wisdom wants us to avoid these pitfalls and live a life of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. This life of true wisdom only comes from a relationship with Jesus. For in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Take-Home Message: God alone knows the path of wisdom.
