Praying Scripture

Michelle Berkey

I was a long time into my life as a Christ-follower. Years. Maybe even decades-old as a believer before I began the practice of praying scripture, before I’d even heard of it. I’ve done fancy prayer journals, simple prayers, organized and led three-day fasting and prayer events, and church prayer retreats. I’ve read countless books on prayer. But, other than simply sitting in the presence of God and feeling loved on, praying scripture is my favorite type of prayer. Praying using the words of God is simple and helps keep our hearts and mind focused during prayer (hello, who else has trouble staying on task in prayer?). It gives us confidence that our words are based in truth and aligns our perspective with God’s. This show is about learning by doing. I won't be teaching, I'll actually be praying and we record the episodes live each weekday on Facebook. In every episode, we pray through four topics: worship, a psalm, prayer for ourselves, and prayer for our culture. My heart is that as we pray scripture together, that we’ll grow in our prayer lives, that God will use this time to direct our hearts in our own circumstances, and that he’ll answer these prayers in mighty ways. But most of all, I hope that by joining me in praying scripture, you’ll fall deeper in love with the God who gave us these words. Get comfy and let’s get started! 1. Praying Through the Book of Esther: Part 4

Praying Through the Book of Esther: Part 4

Charles Ketttering said, “It is the ‘follow thought’ that makes the difference between ultimate success and failure, because it is so easy to stop.” We have a few examples of follow through today, both human and holy as well as the conclusion of Esther’s story. Personal Update: I spent part of my Saturday working on a quilt project for a friend. I finished a handful of blocks, but it was a struggle. I spent much of the work time unpicking and re-making. It was a reminder about why process is as or more important than product. About Prayer The way we teach and talk about prayer often puts it squarely in the “obligation” category. It becomes a to do list item to check off, something we develop elaborate systems or routines to maintain, or something to feel guilty about. Is prayer an obligation? Speaking to the ones we love happens naturally and so should talking to God. Sometimes we schedule important conversations, but that’s the exception rather than the rule. How does this apply to your prayer life. Weekly Prayer Focus & Today’s Verses Worship:  Psalm 147:5 Prayer: Esther 8:1-3, 8:15-17, 9:1-2, and 10:1-3 My evening Facebook posts focus on praying scripture.
