    Today I speak with Scott De Silva, the current Auckland Council Manager of Regional Parks and an operations controller in Auckland Emergency Management when Cyclone Gabrielle hit. He has worked in Muriwai and been part of the community for many years and lives nearby in Cable Road. Scott talks about what Auckland Council was expecting and preparations taken before the weather event, his role in the recovery and restoration of Muriwai, the first community meeting in Muriwai, managing communications and some of the frustrations he experienced. We explore the Muriwai cordons process, opinions of the cordons within the community and beyond, impacts of the cordons on local commercial businesses and the security systems adopted. Scott shares the challenges at this time, the learnings, the changes and developments in emergency management in Auckland Council and Regional Parks that have been undertaken, and advice he has for other communities facing or impacted by a weather event.     In this episode I speak to Michael Ward, known by most as Nate. Nate is married to Kate Ward who I also speak to on the podcast. He was the Chairman of the Surf Club at Muriwai at the time of Cyclone Gabrielle. He is now the Finance Administration Convenor and is still a trustee of the facility that owns and manages the surf club building. Nate talks about the issues on the night and in the days following at the surf club, which became the evacuation point for the Muriwai community on the night of Cyclone Gabrielle and a pivotal gathering point for the community. He talks about the learnings and actions that have been taken to prepare the facility better for possible weather events including plans for water, infrastructure, systems, resources, funding, power and communication.  Nate shares advice he has for other communities dealing with a weather event like this and running a community facility that has become an evacuation point as well as an integral part of a community’s response to a disaster and subsequent recovery.     In this episode I speak to Muriwai local Jeremy Jones. Jeremy’s home in Motutara Road was initially 'white stickered' then  ‘red stickered’ despite him not feeling their home was under threat. He was very involved in the creation of the stickered residents group of more than 150 residents’ on What’s App. He talks about the intentions for this group and how it operated. Jeremy shares his feelings about being ordered out of his undamaged home, considering not complying with the demands from Auckland council, being given 40 minutes to pack up his family home not knowing if they would ever return, and his anger about some of the decisions made and actions taken by the council. He finishes with advice to other communities and a heartfelt message he wrote to the firefighters and Muriwai community 7 weeks after the cyclone.     In this episode I speak to Mike Hibbert. Mike is a Muriwai resident and was a key figure in managing communications for Muriwai after Cyclone Gabrielle.  Mike talks about his role as the chair of the Stickered Residents Group, the high trust relationships he built with media, council members and central government, the numerous media interviews he was part of, connecting with CEOs of banks, other businesses and government agencies, the power of electing leaders to represent and speak for the community and gathering information to share. He explains the issues he was involved in such as housing and welfare, insurance, financial assistance, council timelines, managing donations, market valuations, managed retreats and buy outs, communication with the community, funding negotiations and accommodation.  Mike shares how it felt to be told his family could move back into their home in Motutara Rd more than 9 months after the event after expecting never to return, how it felt to be home and what they had to deal with, and how his role and the event affected him and his family emotionally.  And he gives a great overview of where the Muriwai community is now, 3 years on, and advice he has for other communities going through a similar event.     I chat to Clare Bradley in this episode. Clare is the owner of the Muriwai Lodge, and she was the joint chair of MCA at the time of the cyclone. She is a resident of Muriwai and was not allowed to live in her home in Domain Crescent for 9 months after the cyclone.  We discuss the impact on the lodge and her home on the night, the success of many community initiatives in the recovery and restoration period, the part that Auckland council played, dealing with MPs to get the support we needed, the cordons and how MCA could support the community with fundraising and communication. Clare talks about the stages of reopening the Muriwai Lodge and Motutara Road, including a blessing ceremony guided by iwi, how the cyclone affected people and learnings around insurance   Clare comments on where we’re at as a community and a nation 3 years on and what she thinks has been the hardest part of recovery.     Mace Ward from Auckland Council joins me in this episode.     In this episode I speak with Kenton Osmond, a long time Muriwai resident who is a member of the Muriwai Community Association and was a key figure in establishing and managing the Muriwai Emergency Response Group following the cyclone for almost 9 months. Kenton talks about the creation of this group, their role coordinating messaging and communication, organising volunteers to help and delegating, connecting with other emergency services and the council, and the multitude of excellent initiatives that were expertly developed to support the community. We discuss water supply, cordons, the red stickered group, communicating with the community in different ways, connecting with MPs and preparations for future weather events in Muriwai.     In this episode I talk to Maria Koppens. Maria was a resident of Muriwai but lost her family home as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle and is now living in the neighbouring suburb of Waimauku. Maria shares how she applied her marketing skills to the restoration phase in Muriwai, creating a ‘brand’ named Restore Muriwai, connecting with politicians and councillors as well as connecting across impacted communities through the creation of surveys and a database, and building a strong presence and relationship with the NZ media. We discuss temporary accommodation support, insurance, buy outs and categorisations, the dispute and independent review processes and the Muriwai commemorative sculpture.  Maria shares her feelings around having to move away from Muriwai and settling into a lifestyle property and she has some great advice for communities impacted by a traumatic weather event.
