What do some of the most prominent and successful Indigenous artists, leaders and professors have in common? They aren’t Indigenous. There are hundreds of cases of Indigenous identity fraud that we know about, and likely thousands that we do not. So why do these so-called “pretendians” do it? How do they pull it off? And what happens when they are exposed? In each episode of this riveting new podcast series, co-hosts Robert Jago (Kwantlen First Nation and Nooksack Indian Tribe) and Angel Ellis (Muscogee (Creek) Nation) reveal unbelievable stories of audacious fraudsters and investigate the complex phenomenon of Indigenous identity theft. Education is the way

Learning about others experiences is so greatly needed in this country. Well made podcast that should be used to help others understand lived experiences of indigenous people and how being a pretendían negatively impacts them.
interesting in some parts; frustrating in most

I gave this podcast two star due to what i feel is very un journalistic discourse being discussed on this podcast. For the most part, they target celebrities and the odd politician who makes the claim that they are an indigenous person even though they have no record of such ancestry, using programs that were made for indigenous people like health, college, and other programs, that’s fine. however, they don’t do a good job really discerning what makes someone a pretendian. The part about people pretend to be something they’re not is easy to understand however, they make a lot of statements about the easiest way to spot a “pretendian” is essentially to see if they’re cringe or not. I’m sorry, but that is some of the laziest advised to find fakers. It’s just a very elitist attitude towards indigenous identity, acting as if everybody indigenous is super knowledgeable about their culture and doesn’t do stupid, cringy or indeed ignorant things to express their culture. (which isn’t true btw, from my familial experience)
Loved it!

Extremely helpful to learn in a conversational style investigative podcast how we continue to harm native people in absolutely assbackaward ways. The perfect topic to not only be critically analyzed but discussed by those with lived experience to help me, a white woman, better understand the impact on an emotional level. Though this would have been outside the realm of lived experience for the hosts, I would have loved to learn more about native peoples historic relationship to those tribes in Mexico, since that seemed to have been a prominent theme. Also feel the AI generated songs take away from the otherwise very quality podcast - it could have been leveraged as an opportunity to highlight real artists/native artists.
