Model the Behavior — Chief Freddy Fernandez

Send us Fan Mail What does 32 years in the fire service teach a man about leadership, discipline, and living with intention? This week Gabriel sits down with a special guest — Chief Freddy Fernandez, a retired City of Miami fire chief who held every rank on the way up, a CrossFit athlete at 63, and the founder of Fire Assessment Center Prep — and runs him through the ProActivators Six Pillars, one at a time, scored honestly from 1 to 10. It's the framework tested live on a life well lived. Freddy won't claim a single 10 at anything — "I always think there's room for improvement" — and that restraint is the whole point. Inside the six pillars: Faith (7) — daily devotionals, a decision made later in life, and "Jesus wasn't a victim. He was a volunteer." Family (8–9) — 39 years married, "give without remembering, and receive without forgetting," and why you never keep score. Fitness (9) — from stadium-stair workouts at the old Orange Bowl to 15 years of CrossFit — plus the one number he won't give himself (nutrition, under 5). Finances (8–9) — a humble immigrant upbringing, "pay yourself first" starting at $25 a paycheck, and never carrying a balance. Focus — the certifications he lost by drifting, the news cycle that still pulls him in, and deferred gratification as the way back. Fulfillment (6) — the small daily acts: returning the stray grocery cart, waving a driver in, actually waiting for the answer to "how are you?" Plus the leadership doctrine running through all of it: "A leader of one can one day lead many — but if you can't lead one, you can never lead any." Model the behavior, don't just talk about it. And the line every ProActivator should carry: "You cannot demonstrate something on a test you don't already possess." You Can't Change What You Can't See

Send us Fan Mail Gabriel is back after a week away — and he has something to report. His first ProActivators Executive Mindset Workshop ran, and it worked. Not perfectly. But it did the one thing that matters most: people became aware. This episode is about the doctrine underneath that whole day — you can't change what you can't see. We spend years reacting the same way, repeating the same habits, tolerating the same things, until it all becomes so normal we stop seeing it. That's the Drift. And you cannot interrupt a pattern you don't recognize, correct a drift you can't see, or make a Shift until you know where you're standing. Inside: the Shift (becoming aware of where your attention has been going), how habits actually work so you can catch the trigger in real time, the Three P's — the Pretender, the Producer, the Proactive — and the question that made the room go quiet: which one have you been allowing to run your life? Plus why comfort is more dangerous than crisis, the workshop as a mirror, and the No More Moment where people named what had been holding them back, wrote it down, and signed a contract in front of witnesses. And a turn Gabriel didn't expect: awareness isn't something you get to teach and then become exempt from. He has to look in his own mirror too — what worked, what didn't, where he can go deeper next time. This week's challenge: what have you been living with for so long that you've stopped seeing it? Don't try to fix everything. Just identify it. Put the mirror in front of yourself — because once you can see it, you can start making the Shift. We don't drift. We decide. And this week — we decide to see. The next ProActivators Executive Mindset Workshop is Saturday, September 26, then the last Saturday of every month. Registration details coming soon. Thanks for tuning in to The ProActivators Podcast — Mental Meat, not Mental Candy.  This is where we terminate procrastination and build State-of-the-art leaders across the six pillars: Faith, Family, Fitness, Finances, Focus, and Fulfillment. I Was There. But I Wasn't There.

Send us Fan Mail This week, Gabriel's sixteen-year-old son taught him something he didn't enjoy learning. Enzo and Gabriel are alike — both stubborn, neither quick to say "you're right." But after a disagreement, they kept talking, and Enzo told him the truth: Dad, you're very involved in our lives — but sometimes you're so focused on the doing that you're disconnected emotionally. You're here. But sometimes you're not HERE. This episode is about what that exposed. The emotional bank account has more than one currency — providing, cooking, hugging, showing up are all real deposits, but they don't replace emotional presence: listening, digging deeper, being curious about what's inside your kids instead of what needs doing around them. You can be sitting five feet away and be somewhere else completely. And the timing was almost uncomfortable: Gabriel is preparing a workshop to help people become aware of where they're drifting — and his sixteen-year-old had to make him aware of where HE was drifting. That's the Respectable Drift: not a bad thing pulling you off course, but a GOOD thing taking too much. The victory wasn't that Gabriel caught it — he didn't. Enzo caught it. The victory was being humble enough to be caught, and to say "you're right." This week's challenge: ask someone you love, "Where have I been present physically, but absent emotionally?" — and then don't defend. Just listen. We don't drift. We decide. And when the people we love hold up a mirror, we don't defend — we listen. You Don't Know It's a Memory Yet

Send us Fan Mail In 1995, Gabriel's family moved to a whole new country — a new language, a new winter, a new world for a fourteen-year-old. A couple months later, his dad brought home a Dalmatian named Money. This episode is the story of that dog — the whole-body wag hello after school, the wrestling matches under a tree at the park, the day Money stole a baseball mid-game and the whole field chased him, the long hallway where his nails couldn't grip the wooden floor and he'd slide into the wall. Ordinary afternoons. Nothing Gabriel thought he needed to remember. Then one day, a phone call at his teenage job: "Gabriel. Mon is dead." Thirty years later, he still remembers every bit of it. And that's the lesson: at fourteen, he didn't know he was living a memory — he just thought he was living a Tuesday. Nobody stands in an ordinary moment and knows it's sacred until it's already gone. Attention is the real currency — the only one that actually buys you a life — and unlike money, you don't know how much you have left. We don't build a meaningful life someday. We build it now, out of ordinary Tuesdays, one brick at a time. So before today ends: create one memory on purpose. Put the phone down. Make the ordinary moment matter. You won't know it's a memory yet. But one day, you'll be glad you built it anyway. Show Up Until It Comes Back

Send us Fan Mail Last week Gabriel was sick — bedbound, no energy, the whole week gone. The lesson then: rest isn't Drift, rest is stewardship. This week is the part nobody talks about — because getting better and feeling like yourself again are not the same thing. Tuesday he told himself "I'm back" and went to CrossFit.  He wasn't back. He was a shell of himself — like somebody handed him the keys to an old minivan when he's used to driving a Ferrari. He pressed the gas, and nothing came. But he kept showing up. Wednesday, still rough. Thursday, he was honest before the first rep and scaled the load — not the standard, just the weight (that's not weakness, that's wisdom).  Two rounds in the first half. Then the run in the middle — and somewhere out there, the engine came back. Two rounds became six. Friday: full RX, no scaling, finished in 19:33. The real lesson: you don't have to feel like yourself to start acting like yourself. Anybody can show up when they feel like a Ferrari — it takes a decision to show up when you feel like a minivan. That's identity. You don't find your stride and then start moving. You start moving, and somewhere along the way, you find your stride. Show up until it comes back. We don't drift. We decide. It Got Me. Again.

Send us Fan Mail A few weeks ago Gabriel told you the Drift is an excellent negotiator — that it never announces itself, it just whispers. He told you to catch the pattern and kill the negotiator. And then it got him. Again. This is a confession. For almost two months, little by little, Gabriel drifted on his own rules — one dessert, one event, one "I'll get back on track Monday" — until a conference in Miami made it impossible to ignore.  The man who wrote the framework caught himself negotiating with it the exact same way he warned everyone about. The lesson: nobody graduates from watching for the Drift. Not even the person who wrote the book. You make rules when you're strong so they protect you when you're weak. Falling was never the goal — getting up is, every single time.  That's the Reset. Plus: why the ProActivators app isn't an accountability app, it's an awareness tool — and the Friday morning the phrase "We don't drift. We decide." literally got Gabriel out of bed and into a 7 AM CrossFit class. You can't interrupt a Drift you don't recognize. We don't drift. We decide. Own It

Send us Fan Mail Some weeks Gabriel writes to help you. This week, he needed to hear it himself. This one is a confession. Gabriel had to own three different areas of his life in a single week — missing multiple game-winning shots and letting his teammates down, coming home harsh and imposing his will on his wife and boys, and letting a customer slip through the cracks at work. Three places he could have blamed the circumstances. Three places he chose to own it instead. The doctrine: You cannot improve what you refuse to own. Ownership isn't punishment — ownership is permission. The moment you blame someone else, you hand them the power to fix your life, and they probably never will. Why naming your failure out loud builds a stop sign at the fork in the road. Why owning it is only half the work — you have to build the guardrail so you never own that same mistake twice. And the two questions to sit with before the day is over: What am I blaming that I actually need to own? And what guardrail can I put in place today? We don't protect our pride. We protect our growth. We don't drift. We decide.
