Akena Latigo: Mastering Mind and Muscle

In the latest episode of The ProFitness Podcast, Akena Latigo, a model, actor, and revered fitness trainer, shares a compelling narrative that transcends the conventional discourse on fitness. His story is not just about physical strength but an enlightening journey of mental resilience, cultural identity, and the transformative power of sports and fitness in shaping lives. Akena's tale begins far from the bustling streets of Chicago, where he's made his mark. Born in Arizona and raised in Toledo, Ohio, by Ugandan immigrant parents, his life is a testament to the rich tapestry of experiences that have molded him into the influential figure he is today.  Akena's early exposure to sports, starting with golf, courtesy of his father's passion, laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to fitness and well-being. Yet, it's his transition from the golf courses of Northwest Ohio to the diverse world of sports—from basketball to track and field—that illuminates his narrative with lessons of adaptability, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. Akena's collegiate journey as a walk-on basketball player at Illinois Tech further underscores the theme of resilience. His narrative delves into the mental fortitude required to excel in sports and life, emphasizing the importance of setting goals, embracing challenges, and the relentless pursuit of personal improvement.  "I love to challenge people. I love a challenge. I love being challenged. And fitness is an easy way to create challenges, to test your strength, to test your fortitude, not just physically, but mentally. 99 percent of the physical journey, it's mental. I promise you that," Akena shares, encapsulating the essence of his philosophy. Beyond the physical, Akena's story is deeply intertwined with his cultural heritage and the values instilled by his parents. His journey is a vivid illustration of how fitness and sports can serve as conduits for life's broader lessons—accountability, discipline, and the significance of community.  These themes resonate throughout the episode, as Akena articulates the role of fitness in fostering a sense of belonging and purpose, particularly during the isolating times of the pandemic. Akena's transition into modeling and his approach to fitness underscore a holistic view of health that encompasses not just the physical but the mental and emotional realms. His insights into the challenges posed by modern lifestyles, such as sedentary habits and the perils of technology, offer valuable lessons on the importance of mindfulness, balance, and the integration of fitness into daily life. In essence, Akena Latigo's narrative on The ProFitness Podcast is a beacon of inspiration. It's a reminder that fitness is not merely a physical endeavor but a journey of mental resilience, a celebration of cultural identity, and a pathway to personal growth and community connection. His story encourages us to embrace challenges, set attainable goals, and find joy in the journey of self-improvement.

episode 002 | Stephanie Welter with AC Cornejo

Stephanie Welter with Keller Williams Success Realty sits down with her personal trainer and owner of Absolute Custom Fitness in Lake County, AC Cornejo on this episode of the ProFitness Podcast.  Growing up in Rogers Park in Chicago, AC played sports but it wasn’t a huge part of his life. Surprisingly, his fitness journey began in his 20s when he suffered a near death experience at work falling 26 ft onto concrete. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after his brain injury, was put on a cocktail of medications, and was in the ICU for 10 days. He left the hospital at 140 lbs and quickly gained about 100 more from all the medicine.  After taking a boxing class at his cousin’s gym, AC had an epiphany.  “I woke up the next day and I was just like, you know what? This is enough. I’m not meant to live this way. God does not want me to live this way.” From there, he joined a gym run by a professional bodybuilder who literally and figuratively showed him the ropes. Now, certified in both group fitness and personal training, he and his wife have a dream to open up a spiritual healing center with a physical fitness portion.  “ I'll be the one helping people preserve their God-given temples and my wife, with her specialties, she'll be doing the yoga there. She's also a life coach and a hypnotherapist.”  The two discuss how AC’s approach is holistic. It’s not only about getting fit and gaining muscle, as Stephanie puts it, “It’s more like, wow. I feel like my soul feels open.” Tune in to this episode of the ProFitness Podcast and hear more about AC’s approach to holistic fitness, tips and tricks from a personal trainer who survived a traumatic brain injury, and more.

episode 001 | Javier Gutierrez | Personal Trainer

On the first episode of the Pro Fitness podcast, Javier Gutierrez sits down and shares his story and his passion about fitness. Some will call him a personal trainer, but to Javier, it’s a bit more than that.  “I'm a personal trainer, I'm a coach. I will help you with your health, with your fitness, with your nutrition, with your mindset.” Living in Mexico for 10 years to play professional basketball and baseball, Javier fell in love with the camaraderie of being involved in a team sport. So when that chapter of his life closed, he gravitated towards coaching others. He approaches his clients in a very personalized way whether he’s working with an 80-year-old person or a professional athlete.  “My philosophy is finding what it is that person needs the most. Sometimes they know it, sometimes they don't really know it. And really just getting to them to live a better functional life. Moving.” The biggest piece of advice he gives people who first begin working with him is, you have to be patient.  “My approach is always telling people, just be patient with me. Just understand that, that first month, it's building habits and understand that it's a long process. I've been doing it for 10 years. I haven't stopped.” Javier shares stories of his own struggles throughout the years from family to finances and how he was able to mentally overcome the things that were holding him back. Everything he’s learned through experience and hardship he passes on to his clients to help them dig into being truly honest with themselves to accomplish their goals.  Tune in on this inaugural episode of the ProFitness podcast to learn more about Javier’s story and his advice on how to reach your optimal health goals.
