    A look at our 250-year-old Republic, and how we prepare for the next 250 years.

    The United States has always been a hard-won democratic experiment. Understanding our history is not simple. It includes achievements worth honoring, lessons worth reflecting on, and painful periods that demanded major action to keep the country moving forward. If the next 250 years are to be successful, and if we are to preserve our republic and democracy, people must get involved. Civil debate and cooperative discussion across differing views can produce durable policies that serve everyone. If we want to make informed choices and chart a better future, we must learn to separate opinion, half-truths, and outright falsehoods from honest facts and real understanding. I raise my half-full glass for a toast to the future. Happy Birthday America!
