A Neighbor Near

When disaster strikes, you won’t have to ask your brother for assistance. It’s better to go to a neighbor than to a brother who lives far away.”Some relationships come with impressive titles. Brother. Sister. Family. Best friend.We can polish those titles until they shine so brightly that we stop asking whether the relationship itself is still working.Because a title can be exalted… and still not be available.Proverbs 27:10 says it plainly:“It’s better to go to a neighbor than to a brother who lives far away.” (NLT)That sounds almost disrespectful until life happens.The car won’t start. The pipe bursts. The grief hits at two in the morning.And suddenly, the person five minutes away may become more helpful than the person you have loved for fifty years.This is in no way an attack on family. It is wisdom about presence and proximity.Jesus once asked: “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Then He looked at the people around Him and said those who do the will of God were His brother, sister, and mother.That statement carries more weight when you remember that even His own brothers didn’t always believe in Him.Jesus knew what it was to have people who were physically close… but emotionally far away. And He also knew what it was to find family among people who stayed, listened, believed, and walked with Him.Maybe closeness is not only measured by blood or by land. Maybe it is measured by availability. By who answers when you call. Who notices your quiet pain. Who keeps showing up when it matters most.We can become so committed to the mythology of a relationship that we ignore the people actually standing beside us.Honor your family. Keep your old friends. But do not overlook the neighbor near enough to answer your cry.Sometimes God provides through the person already close.🔥 REMEMBERA title names the relationship. Rocket Love

Proverbs 26:1 (TPT)“It is totally out of place to promote and honor a fool, just like it’s out of place to have snow in the summer and rain at harvest time.”Today's Episode: Rocket LoveIt's the end of July.Which means if you live in Texas, you're asking one very serious question:What's hotter than July?Easy.August.We haven't even gotten there yet.But whenever I hear the phrase Hotter Than July, I don't think about the weather.I think about Stevie Wonder's classic 1980 album.One of my favorite songs on it is “Rocket Love.”I'll give you just a taste of Stevie's brilliant lyrics.in the Chorus he laments:You took me riding in your rocket, gave me a starBut at a half a mile from heaven you dropped me backDown to this cold, cold world...Stevie! Tell us the truth about how romance goes sometimes!I've always thought the best blues songs pull off a strange miracle.They sound so good...while they're making you feel something that hurts so bad.The groove makes you smile.The story breaks your heart.That's the blues.Stevie sings about a love that launched him into the heavens...only to leave him standing in a cold, cold world.That's irony.And Proverbs 26:1 gives us another picture of irony:“It is totally out of place to promote and honor a fool, just like it’s out of place to have snow in the summer and rain at harvest time.”I love that phrase:Totally out of place.Wisdom notices what doesn't belong.Snow...in summer.Rain...at harvest.Honor...without character.Sometimes life gives us a kind of Rocket Love.We get launched into places our character hasn't learned to live yet.The promotion comes before the preparation.The spotlight arrives before the substance.The altitude comes faster than the attitude can sustain...before the soul has learned how to breathe up there.God isn't trying to keep us from high places.He's preparing us to live there.Because honor isn't dangerous.Honor without formation is.So don't just pray for greater opportunities.Pray for deeper wisdom.Then when life lifts you higher...you'll have the character to stay there.REMEMBERDon't chase an altitude your character hasn't learned to breathe in yet.PRAYERLord, grow my character before You grow my influence and opportunities.TODAY'S CHALLENGEThink of one person already living at the altitude you're praying for. Weaponized Words

Proverbs 25:18"A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow."You've seen this scene in a hundred movies.The witness walks into the courtroom.Raises their right hand."Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?"We usually focus on the word truth.But lately, I've been thinking about the word witness.Because a witness has power.Somebody's reputation.Their livelihood.Their relationships.Maybe even their freedom can be sitting on the other side of your words.That's why Proverbs 25:18 hit me:"A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow." (KJV)First of all I picked the KJV on purpose just because of that word maul... what a word!"I shall maul you!" Gotta love the KJV!But also notice that Solomon doesn't say the false witness HAS a weapon.He says the false witness IS a weapon.A maul crushes up close.A sword cuts anything within reach.And an arrow?An arrow can wound somebody from a distance.Sometimes before they even know who fired it.But false witness isn't only standing in court and telling a bald-faced lie.Sometimes I can tell you exactly what happened…and still not tell you the whole story.I can leave out the part where I was wrong.I can exaggerate what somebody did to me.I can tell it from an angle that makes me the hero and guarantees you know who the villain is.And I've lived long enough to revisit some of my own stories.People I once saw only through the lens of how difficult they were…I can now appreciate for some of the difficult lessons they taught me.Maybe they pushed me deeper.Demanded more.Wouldn't let my charisma carry me where my character still needed to grow.That doesn't mean every painful thing becomes okay.It means maturity can change the narrator.And sometimes wisdom asks us to tell the story again…without the weapons.Because every story has a narrator.The question is:Is the narrator armed?REMEMBER: Don't weaponize a story just because you're holding the microphone.PRAYER: Lord, disarm my words and make my witness completely truthful.TODAY'S CHALLENGE: Think of one person you've made the villain in a story you tell. Stop Lurking

Proverbs 24:15“Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous, do not plunder their dwelling place.”Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.In May of 2000, Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 Cent, was sitting in a car outside his grandmother’s house in Queens when a gunman approached.Nine shots.One hit him in the face.He survived.Three years later, the world heard him rapping about that experience in “Many Men.”I’ve heard that song a hundred times.But one detail stopped me.It didn’t happen at a club.It didn’t happen backstage.It happened at his grandmother’s house.A dwelling place.Listen to Proverbs 24:15:“Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous, do not plunder their dwelling place.” (NIV)Now notice who Solomon is talking to.Not the person inside.He doesn’t say:“Be afraid.”“Move.”“Build a taller fence.”He turns toward whoever is outside.Do not lurk.Solomon looks into the shadows and says:I see you.Now before you picture somebody hiding in bushes with a weapon…come closer.Most of us have never lurked outside somebody’s house.But we’ve lurked on somebody’s page.Watching.Scrolling.Somebody’s doing well.Their marriage looks happy.Their career is moving.Their ministry is growing.And something inside us is just…available.Waiting for the crash.We even call it lurking.I’m not here to scold you.Just notice it.Sometimes envy doesn’t attack.It watches.Sometimes jealousy doesn’t speak.It waits.But here’s what comforts me.The person inside the house doesn’t even have to know you’re there.Wisdom sees the shadows.And before the righteous person is told to be afraid, the lurker is told to leave.Maybe that’s God’s mercy working both directions.Protecting the house.And calling the lurker back into the light.Wait…There’s a bar in there somewhere.God’s mercies be working while these lurkers be lurking,Better step back before it’s closed curtains!What is this…Freestyle Friday?Anyway…Maybe mercy really does work like that.Guarding the house while still calling people out of the shadows.🔥 REMEMBERYou don’t have to fall for somebody else to rise.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, guard our homes and keep me from the shadows.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGEThink of one person doing well whom you’ve quietly, maybe even secretly, expected to stumble. Reverse the lurk. Send them something kind today. Encourage them. Celebrate them. It Was Just Yesterday

Proverbs 23:25 “So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.”Okay, I promise I’m not turning Proverbs Daily into The Lakyn Show.Just give me a little grace.I’m a new grandpa.This past Sunday, I was standing in our daughter Asia’s house holding her newborn son.My grandson.And everybody in the house was just…happy.You know those moments when nobody has to manufacture the joy?It was just there.And while I was holding Lakyn, something happened in my mind.For a moment, in a flash it was thirty-something years ago.I was standing in our little apartment holding Asia.Our baby girl.Her first week home from the hospital.And I thought…Man.That was just yesterday.Then Proverbs 23:25 touched me differently:“So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.” (NLT)Standing there, I realized I was somehow on both sides of that verse.I’m still somebody’s son.I was once the baby being held.Then I became the father holding my daughter.And now I’m the grandfather watching my daughter hold her son.Three generations.Just like that. And for this little moment…I’m standing right at the hinge.Life will do that to you.The days can feel incredibly long while you’re living in them.Working.Raising children.Trying to pay bills.Making mistakes.Figuring people out. Figuring yourself out!Then one day, you look up…and yesterday is standing in front of you holding tomorrow.That’s why I want to tell somebody today:Keep on loving.Keep on living.Keep on doing the work.Even if you don’t have children, you’re still planting something in people whether you know it or not.You may not see where all this love is going yet.But sometimes life surprises you with a moment that lets you see the pattern.And when it happens…hold it.Because yesterday doesn’t really disappear.Sometimes it grows up, has a baby, and hands you tomorrow.🔥 REMEMBERYesterday may be quietly growing into tomorrow right before you.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, give me more moments to see love come full-circle.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGECall one person who held you when you were small. The Next Sure Thing

Proverbs 19:21“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” (New International Version)Right now, somewhere around the world, a whole lot of people are staring at a screen.Stats say between one and two billion people will watch the World Cup Final.Spain versus Argentina.Literally — the whole world is watching.It’s the World Cup Final.Spain versus Argentina.And every fan watching has a plan.Well...they’re depending on somebody else’s plan.The right lineup.The right plays.The right substitutions.The right strategy.For weeks, people have filled out brackets, made predictions, argued with friends and confidently explained exactly how their team was going to get here.And when that final whistle blows...A whole lot of those plans are going to be wrong.Not because they were stupid plans.That’s just life.A Prussian general said it best:No plan survives first contact with the enemy.You can draw it up perfectly...and then reality walks onto the field.Proverbs 19:21 says:“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”I don’t think Solomon is telling us not to plan.Plan!Study the film.Set the goal.Build the strategy.But leave some room for reality to surprise you.And leave some room for God.Because here’s something I’ve always found interesting.After a big game, somebody on the winning team will say,“I just thank God for the victory.”And I understand the gratitude.But I sometimes wonder...Was God against the other team?Was He planning for them to lose?I don’t think that’s the point.Maybe God’s purpose is bigger than the scoreboard.Maybe it’s bigger than whether your plan worked exactly the way you pictured it.Because sometimes...your plan can lose...without your life losing.The thing you wanted doesn’t happen.The door closes.The play breaks down.And somehow, somewhere you never planned to go...you discover purpose waiting for you.So yes.Make your plans.Make good ones.Just don’t confuse your plan with God’s purpose.One is the route you drew.The other is what can still prevail when the route changes.🔥 REMEMBERYour plan can fail without your life failing.🙏🏽 PRAYERLord, help me plan boldly and trust Your purpose completely.🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGELook at one plan you're holding tightly today and ask: "If this changes, can I still trust that my life has purpose?"About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
