CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:05): I think it comes naturally for some people. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:09): And then go back to the people who are misleading them. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:12): And they say, meh, meh, Chloe said this is anti-vax. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:00:16): You have written about product cults a lot. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:20): Some technicality. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:21): We all know that YouTube’s copyright strikes when it’s clear-cut fair use and that CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:28): people get accounts suspended on social media because of automated systems making CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:32): nonsensical decisions. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:00:35): who want to set up private cities that operate like monarchies, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:00:39): were buying up tons of land in California. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:00:42): And when some ranchers refused to sell, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:00:45): these guys sued their neighbors who didn’t want to sell just for talking to each MATT STRACKBEIN (00:00:50): other. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:50): Weaponizing the law is actually a specialty for some industries. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:54): It’s an industry in itself, really. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:00:56): Some people make a living weaponizing the law for big business. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:00): Who knows how many of these bot accounts are out there swaying minds with the exact MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:04): same messages. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:05): That he replied himself with his own same account as if he was praising himself. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:13): And I think he waved it away as if it was normal to do that referring to CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:17): himself in the third person. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:18): Why else? MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:21): Would there be a willingness to trust the account even after an obvious pivot? MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:27): Because the pivot didn’t happen before the platform reached a certain size. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:32): And that size has real value. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:34): If your priority is always keeping yourself viral and keeping your content viral, CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:39): if that’s your number one priority, CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:41): then you will engage in controversy even to the detriment of the movements you’re CHLOE HUMBERT (00:01:47): purportedly hired to help. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:50): They’re just, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:51): you know, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:51): having fun, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:52): sharing pictures of cats and grandchildren while stepping directly into the line of MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:57): fire, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:57): so to speak, MATT STRACKBEIN (00:01:58): for bots and trolls. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:02:00): And then gets dogpiled by some anonymous troll accounts. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:02:04): Maybe they’re bots. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:02:05): Maybe they’re sock puppets. CHLOE HUMBERT (00:02:07): A mob of online angry villagers with flaming torches coming for somebody. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:02:12): And so it goes. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:02:13): It never stops. MATT STRACKBEIN (00:02:14): Why won’t somebody make it stop? CHLOE HUMBERT (00:02:17): No, Elon Musk is not selling tiny houses for a few thousand dollars each.
