    Creating While Mothering with Christina Cone (Musical Artist, Creative Agency Founder/Owner)

    On this episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with my dear friend Christina Cone in her home here in East Nashville. I knew she would be the perfect person to talk with about how to maintain one’s creative and artistic identity while simultaneously diving headfirst into motherhood. Christina fronts the band Frances Cone along with her husband, Andy. She also founded Phases, a boutique creative agency for independent artists, earlier this year. She and I spoke about the terror and magic of motherhood, the necessary price we pay to live in community, the journey of healing from religious trauma, dismantling the legacy burden of codependency, and strategies for keeping the creative flame burning all the while. To coincide with the news of his signing to Partisan Records, Burton has released the new song “Maria.” “Maria” was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon Studio with some of the best studio players in LA, and perfectly showcases Burton's knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam’s striking honeyed vocals-like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson. Together, Wilson and Burton achieve a sound that doesn’t descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, the music finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity.
