How Does Jesus Recruit? | The Cost of Discipleship

How Does Jesus Recruit? | The Cost of Discipleship What if Jesus recruited disciples the way college coaches recruit athletes? In today’s sports world, recruiting often centers on what a program can offer you—playing time, opportunity, facilities, NIL, exposure, and a pathway to the next level. But when Jesus recruited people to follow Him, His pitch sounded radically different: Count the cost. Carry your cross. Put Me first. Follow Me. In this episode of Pass The Rock: Real Talk, Brian Dailey and Laurence Willis break down Jesus’ challenging words in Luke 14:25–27 and ask what they mean for athletes, coaches, parents, and anyone trying to live as a disciple of Christ. Drawing connections between high-level sports and faith, Brian and Lawrence discuss the sacrifice required to become great, the danger of allowing sports or personal ambition to become our greatest treasure, and why Jesus was so upfront about the cost of following Him. They also explore a powerful question: If we're willing to sacrifice time, comfort, relationships, money, and even our bodies to chase an athletic dream, what are we willing to sacrifice to follow Jesus? The conversation gets practical, too—challenging athletes to pray before they play, look for opportunities to practice discipleship in competition, deny insecurity and fear, show humility toward opponents and teammates, and allow faith to determine how they compete. In this episode: Why Jesus’ recruiting pitch was so differentWhat “carry your cross” meant to Jesus’ original audienceThe difference between being a fan and being fully committedWhy Christian and disciple were never meant to be two different identitiesSports, sacrifice, ambition, and the battle for your soulWhy Jesus—not achievement—is the ultimate treasureHow athletes can intentionally practice discipleship while competingPractical ways to integrate faith and sportsThe challenge: We know what it looks like to be all in for the game. Are we willing to be even more all in for Jesus? Pass The Rock: Real Talk Faith. Sports. Real conversations. Win Souls.
