Pull Over is a short-form audio series about American small towns you've been driving past your whole life. Each episode runs about three minutes. One narrator, one town, one specific fact or story that earns your attention. No characters, no plot, no cliffhanger. Just a place that's been waiting for someone to stop.     Winterset, IA

    On May 26, 1907, a boy named Marion Robert Morrison was born in a small four-room house in Winterset, Iowa. His family moved away before he turned four — but decades later, under a different name, he'd become the most recognizable movie cowboy in American film history. The birthplace house is still standing, and a museum next door holds the largest collection of John Wayne artifacts anywhere in the world.

    Canton, OH

    On September 17, 1920, a group of team owners crowded into a car dealership showroom in Canton, Ohio to solve a real problem — professional football had no shared rules and teams were routinely poaching each other's players. That afternoon they organized a league and elected Jim Thorpe its first president on the spot. Two years later, it became the NFL. The Hall of Fame ended up right back where it all started.

    Niland, CA

    In the early 1980s, a man named Leonard Knight tried to build a hot-air balloon painted with a message about God's love and fly it over the California desert. It never got off the ground. Instead of giving up, he built something that couldn't possibly fail to be seen: a fifty-foot mountain of adobe and paint, by hand, alone, over almost three decades. He died in 2014. A nonprofit still maintains it today, exactly as he built it.

    Lucas, KS

    In 1907, a 64-year-old Civil War veteran named S.P. Dinsmoor decided to spend the rest of his life building something enormous out of concrete in his own backyard. No formal training — he just started. Over the next two decades he built more than 150 sculptures depicting his own biblical and political parables, then designed his own tomb as part of the piece. He's still there today, exactly as he planned it.

    Enterprise, AL

    In 1915, a beetle called the boll weevil destroyed sixty percent of Coffee County, Alabama's cotton crop — the entire economy the town of Enterprise was built on. A city councilman had an idea nobody would have guessed: commission a monument to thank the bug. It's still the only monument in the world built to honor an agricultural pest.

    Weeki Wachee, FL

    In 1946, a former Navy diving instructor figured out how to pipe pure air through a hidden hose so a person could breathe underwater with no mask, no tank, and no visible bubbles — and just perform, like they were on dry land. He called them mermaids. The show opened in 1947 and has run daily ever since, outlasting the tiny Florida city that was incorporated specifically to promote it.

He kept doing it for the rest of his life — and when he died in 1974, the town didn't stop. Volunteers have been adding to it ever since. It's past eight million feet of twine now, seventy years on, and still growing.
