S3 Summer Conversation Series E02 with Bob Hayes

We are back again this summer with our Summer Conversation Series! Our goal is to hit up as many educators as we can and share their response to a single summer question.

Last year we asked all our guests an question about an external goal for education. “What’s one thing you want to change about education?” This year though we are going with a more internal and reflective question. “What is one thing you want to change about yourself to be a better educator, leader, or colleague?”

On this episode, we share answers from the crew and Mike sits down with Bob Hayes, an EdTech Instructional Leader in Illinois, to talk about this summer’s reflective question!

S3 Punk Rock Rewind - S1 E08 Breaking The Status Quo

S3 Punk Rock Rewind - S1 E08 Breaking The Status Quo

    It's A PUNK ROCK REWIND!

We are throwing it back to Season One Episode 08!

    "Breaking the Status Quo"

What's more punk rock than bucking the system, fighting the man, and tearing down some walls? That courage to stand up, speak out, and change the system that can be found in punk rock should be found in education too!

Join Mike and Josh as they discuss how they see breaking the status quo as key to education. Our students, our schools, and the communities we serve need us to speak up, stand up, and do things differently to help kids be successful. Whether that's testing students to death, policies that target specific students, or using the same tired methods over and over, lets change it and do something different.

Intro music - "The Change" by The Suicide Machines
Outro music - "Straight Edge" by Minor Threat

S3 Collaboration 08 with Sarah Thomas

S3 Collaboration 08 with Sarah Thomas

One of the awesome things we would see in punk is at shows when musicians from different bands would join forces on stage or when one of your favorite punk singers would lend their growl to some gang vocals on another band's record.

We wanted to create that same thing here at PRC.

On this punk rock collaboration, Josh and Mike chat with Sarah Thomas, founder of EduMatch and regional tech director in her school district! We talk about how EduMatch started, how she views her role in supporting teachers and students, and how she balances both of her gigs. EduMatch was created to help connect educators across the country and world and has grown into a publishing company, a podcasting group, and a source for professional learning.

So lets connect and get ready to learn together!

S3 Reflection 14 - Josh - We need to do something different this time.

S3 Reflection 14 - Josh - We need to do something different this time.

Season 03 Reflection 14 – Josh – We need to do something different this time.

This is Josh. I am tired of kids being shot and killed in school. I’m tired of us as a nation being unable to do anything different about it. I am tired of people in power being unwilling to lead on this issue. This is like six minutes of venting. It probably has nothing new in it. You’ve probably said these same things yourself and at this point a ton of other people have said the same thing. But I didn’t want to talk about Professional Learning, classrooms management, or anything else to do with education this week. I don’t want to talk about punk or music. I want something to change.

If you don’t want to listen to this episode, don’t. I don’t blame you. But if you are tired of seeing students being murdered then join me in doing something different. Make this the political issue you will vote on. Make this the thing you will knock on doors for a candidate for. Make this the thing that you will donate money to. Make keeping our kids safe and passing gun legislation that will protect our communities the thing you are willing to stand up for.

The Punk Rock Classrooms Podcast is the show I never knew I needed! Josh & Mike bring it every week and show just how closely related education and punk really are. A must listen for all educators, even if you aren’t into punk.

Punk!

Mike and Josh really break down what having a #punkrockclassroom should be like, even if you aren’t a punk. The lessons and reflections they share can be applied to every classroom and every educator.
