Right now, the world is in the midst of a pandemic. The novel coronavirus is taking the world by storm. States have been shutting schools down all across the United States, and on March 12, Maryland announced the same for its public schools. That day, CESJDS also announced its plans to switch to distance learning from home. QuaranTEENed is a Lion’s Tale project that serves as an in-depth look at the students affected by this calamity.

    Summertime Sadness

    Many students at CESJDS look forward all year to attending their sleepaway camps during the summer. With the recent cancelation of most camps, students and their parents are left wondering how they are going to fill their summers, and how this is going to set them behind during the college process. This episode features interviews with freshmen Nat Weingarten and Talia Sporkin, sophomores Noam Zaremba, Mimi Lemar and Oren Swagel, juniors Samantha Shell, Solomon Reichbach and Ella Gorodetzky, as well as JDS parent and physician Rachel Schrieber, and Director of College Guidance Sue Rexford. Coming off of spring break, this episode of QuaranTEENed explores the different forms of entertainment people have pursued in our community. QuaranTEENed will be moving away from a weekly release.     Regular school days, student clubs and activities, along with major school events have been canceled or postponed due to the pandemic. In this episode of QuaranTEENed, we take a look at student and faculty reactions to the uncertainty of the future regarding their missed opportunities and activities. Specifically highlighted in this episode is athletics, CESJDS’ a cappella group Shir Madness, Jewish youth groups, and annual events such as Zimriyah, the middle school musical and Art’s Chai Lights. This episode features interviews from Director of Athletics Coach Becky Silberman, Vocal Music Teacher Aaron Dunn, High School Principal and Associate Head of School Marc Lindner and Director of Arts Education David Solomon. Student interviews include juniors Benny Rushfield, Eilah Goldberg and Sophie Krantz, sophomore Ariella Ball, and freshman Eitan Malkus. QuaranTEENed will have a new episode each week of distance learning to revisit this unprecedented chapter in student life.     In this episode, students and teachers reflect on their first week and a half of distance learning. This episode we hear from freshmen Sammy Schreiber and Dalya Offer, sophomores Dalia Siegel and Elyon Topolosky, and juniors Jane Trainor, Josh Bachrach, and revisit junior Tess Mendelson on how she has kept up with her plans.  Jewish History Department Chair Aaron Bregman shares the challenges teachers are facing during this time of uncertainty, especially those with young children, and Dean of Students Roz Landy provides updates on the state of the distance learning program. QuaranTEENed will have a new episode each week of distance learning to revisit this unprecedented chapter in student life.     This Is Just The Beginning

States have been shutting schools down all across the United States, and on March 12, Governor Larry Hogan announced the same for Maryland public schools. That day, CESJDS also announced its plans to switch to distance learning from home. QuaranTEENed is a Lion’s Tale project that serves as an in-depth look at the students affected by this calamity. In this episode, Head of School Rabbi Mitch Malkus addresses his vision for the distance learning program in a time of uncertainty, and junior Tess Mendelson describes how she structures her days to keep her life orderly. Other students, including juniors Rinat Dubrawsky, Sami Himmelfarb, Moshe Zaremba, Arava Rose and Alex Frame, sophomores Will Sexter and Mira Beinart and freshman Jonah Bassin, anxiously await the drastic change coming to their life.
