    The May 2, 1885 Battle on Poundmaker Indian Reserve: When Canada Lost - with Aaron Tootoosis.

    This episode features Aaron Tootoosis from Poundmaker Cree Nation in Treaty 6 territory. Aaron Tootoosis is from the Poundmaker Indian Reserve in Treaty 6 Territory. Both academically and traditionally educated, Aaron brings a grassroots perspective that challenges dominant colonial narratives on the May 2, 1885 battle that took place between the Canadian military and the people of Poundmaker, where Canada ultimately lost the battle. In this episode we explore the events leading up to May 2, 1885, breaking down the political and economic conditions of the time, including starvation policies, land restriction, and the impacts of the Indian Act. Aaron gives a grassroots account leading up to May 2nd as well as the days events that took place. This conversation moves between history, land, and memory, offering a grounded, grassroots account of what happened on Poundmaker Indian Reserve and why it mattered then, and why it still matters now. As a proud mother of four and the head of Red Echo Associates, Kimberly combines her academic excellence and lived experience to empower individuals and communities. Kimberly holds a Master's degree in Aboriginal Social Work from the First Nations University of Canada and a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College. In addition, she has pursued specialized training in a variety of therapeutic modalities, enhancing her ability to deliver impactful and culturally relevant support. With over 30 years of professional experience, Kimberly has dedicated her career to providing counseling and therapy, as well as leading workshops and training sessions for communities across Canada.     Sakej Ward , a Mi'kmaw warrior from Esgenoopetitj, Burnt Church First Nation, has dedicated his life to defending indigenous ways of life, land and peoples. In this Episode Mylan and Sakej discussed the importance of community-based approaches to crisis management, the role and function of warrior societies in indigenous communities, and the challenges of living off the land in the face of industrial society's destruction of natural resources. They also emphasized the need for decolonizing the concept of preparedness and self-reliance from a North American indigenous perspective, and the importance of practical experience and skill development in bushcraft and survival skills.
