Radio New Bloom #22 x NATSA Podcast S2 ep.3: Wen Liu and Wendy Cheng on Taiwan and the (New) Cold War

FOR THE TWENTY-SECOND episode of Radio New Bloom, we are proud to partner with the North American Taiwan Studies Association (NATSA) to co-release an episode featuring a moderated conversation between Professors Wen Liu and Wendy Cheng on “Taiwan and the (New) Cold War.”

This episode is a recording of the first event of NATSA’s 2022 Online Festival, which New Bloom collaborated on and which took place on the evening of July 22, 2022 US time. The event, moderated by Daniel Yo-Ling, explored how we can critically engage with the recent propagation of New Cold War discourses while at the same time bearing in mind the lasting legacy of the Cold War on Taiwan’s history and present. Both of our invited speakers approached this topic by sharing about their current research and book manuscripts. Professor Cheng shared about the lives and radical politics of Taiwanese migrants to the United States from the 1960s to 1980s, such as Lin Shiaw-shin (林孝信), Kao Cheng-yan (高成炎), and Chen Wen-Chen (陳文成); while Professor Liu shared about tankism and Asian American political formation, civil defense training in Taiwan in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the reductionism of Cold war binarism.

Radio New Bloom #21: Ethical Supply Chains and Labor Practices with Dr. Bonny Ling

Radio New Bloom #21: Ethical Supply Chains and Labor Practices with Dr. Bonny Ling

FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST episode of Radio New Bloom, we present a recording of our event from last year on December 15, 2021 with Dr. Bonny Ling.

The event discussed the crucial place that Taiwan plays in global supply chains, whether in terms of semiconductors—of which Taiwan produces over half the global supply—or its fishing fleet—with Taiwan’s distant water fishing fleet ranked as the second-largest in the world. Yet Taiwan’s supply chains are highly dependent on migrant labor, as in the use of migrant fishermen on Taiwan’s near and distant waters fishing fleet, as well as migrant workers in factories for semiconductor manufacturing lines. The talk, then, sought to discuss the various levers possible to push for reform regarding this very pressing issue.

Radio New Bloom #19: Coen Blaauw on Thirty Years of Pro-Taiwan Advocacy in Washington

Radio New Bloom #19: Coen Blaauw on Thirty Years of Pro-Taiwan Advocacy in Washington

FOR THE NINETEENTH episode of Radio New Bloom, we feature an interview with Coen Blaauw, a Dutch lawyer and Senior Policy Advisor to the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), a US non-profit promoting Taiwan’s right to self-determination. He joined FAPA in 1989 and has since become a central figure in the Taiwan independence movement in the United States. He specializes in connecting with members of the US Congress, drafting Taiwan-related legislation, and recruiting support for these legislations.

Having worked with leading figures of the Taiwan democracy and independence movements and once blacklisted by the KMT, Coen has witnessed both Taiwan’s democratization and the development of its independence movement. He is married to Iris Yenching Ho, a Taiwanese native, and is thus a proud “Tâi-uân kiánn-sài (Taiwan son-in-law),” a nickname given to him by fellow independence activists.
