    Books, Dance and Kazakhstan

    Shruti Ghosh is a trained Kathak dancer, teacher and choreographer from Kolkata. She has studied literature and has a Masters Degree in Film Studies from Jadavpur University. She has been performing and teaching dance for 15 years, more recently in Kazakhstan.     Books Science and Society with Prajval Shastri

    Prajval Shastri is an astrophysicist of nearly four decades. She got her PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and after post-doctoral research positions in the University of Texas at Austin, University of California at Berkeley and the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics she was a faculty of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics for 23 years. In her research she specialises in the investigation of giant black holes that are found in the centres of distant galaxies using telescopes at frequencies ranging from radio to x-rays. She is extremely passionate about science outreach, believes that the cultivation of scientific thinking is for everyone and uses astrophysics as a vehicle to engage lay audiences of all ages with these questions. She is also deeply concerned about the gender disparity in the sciences. She is the founder and past Chair of the Gender in Physics Working Group of the Indian Physics Association. In addition to her research publications, her published work includes popular articles on astrophysics, and on the subject of science and society.     Vimala KS, is the firebrand leader of the women’s movement in Karnataka. She is the Founding Member and presently the State Vice President of the ‘All India Democratic Women’s Association,’ (AIDWA) or Janawadi Mahila Sanghathane in Karnataka  She is the convenor of ‘Samvidhana oodu’ or ‘Reading the Constitution’ campaign.As the joint secretary of Samudaya, the well known cultural organisation, she has seen the street theatre movement emerge and grow from close quarters.  She has also edited books on women under the International Women's Day centenary series by Chintana pusthaka.     Deepti is an actor, director, documentary filmmaker and street theatre activist who wears many other hats. An Alumni of National School of Drama, TIE Wing, Tripura, she has conducted several workshops for children and adults in schools, colleges and universities. She also writes songs, stories and plays for children. She has a long association with Haryana Gyan Vigyan Samiti and ‘Jatan Natya Kendra,’ Haryana, a socio-cultural organisation. Listen to her talk about how theatre emerged as a life altering choice for many women in Haryana and the struggle of transition from an individual in a private space to a 'social being' actively participating in the society.
