    Luke 20:41-21:28

    Read along as Matthew guides us through the Gospel of Luke. In these verses, Jesus continues to teach from within the Temple in the days leading up to the Passover Festival. The city and the Temple are abuzz with energy and much of the todo is centered on this Messianic figure--Jesus of Nazareth. The religious leaders are beyond skeptical and wish to trap Jesus, to turn the crowds against him, to rile people up, but meanwhile, Jesus remains calm, asks folks to use their imaginations and warns them against being swept up in the fervent spirit of the day. Jesus is trying to get folks to see that his way of love and peace are the only way forward...war, violence, vitriol, these are manifestations of evil and this Jesus is here to save us from ourselves.     Luke 17:11-37

    Luke 14:15-15:32

    Read along as Matthew guides us through the Gospel of Luke. In these verses, Jesus encounters a challenge from Pharisees about his table fellowship practices that include sinners and tax collectors. Why does Jesus choose to associate with "those people"? Jesus tells the Parable of the Lost Sheep to explain, as well as the Parable of the Lost Coin. God, Jesus explains, is seeking and saving the lost. God wants to find and rescue and redeem all of God's beloved children. Finally, Jesus tells the profound Parable of Two Lost Sons (also known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son). We're left wondering how a story like that concludes--does forgiveness and reconciliation between these sons?
