    The Unfolding Episode 36 Abraham and the Gospel

    “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.’” (Gal. 3:8) “(They) all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Cor. 10:3–4) This covenant [of grace] was differently administered in the time of the law, and in the time of the Gospel; under the law it was administered by promises, prophecies, sacrifices, circumcision, the paschal lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to the people of the Jews, all foresignifying Christ to come, which were for that time sufficient and efficacious, through the operation of the Spirit, to instruct and build up the elect in faith in the promised Messiah, by whom they had full remission of sins, and eternal salvation; and is called the Old Testament. (Westminster Confession of Faith, VII:V) Through signs, shadows, and types, the Son of God was present in the Old Testament to effectually apply the benefits of His grace to His Old Covenant saints.     “Then Yahweh Elohim took the man and he put him in the garden of Eden in order to serve it and in order to guard it.” (Gen. 2:15; my translation) A priest-judge is a temple-guardian, commissioned by the LORD to guard His holy presence from evil and to execute judgment on anything unclean that would defile His holy temple. As we listen and read, let’s keep in mind these points: 1. Adam was a Priest-Judge  2. Israel was a (Collective) Priest-Judge  3. The Levites were a Priest-Judge  4. Canaanite Conquest: Priest-Judgment in the Temple Land  5. The Ultimate Priest-Judge: Jesus Christ and His Kingdom of Priests!     And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will tabernacle among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them... And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God... I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Rev. 21:3, 10, 22) The Bible tells the unfolding story of a Holy God dwelling with His holy people in intimate fellowship within His holy place - that is, within His temple. The temple motif can be traced throughout Scripture in this way: God dwelt with His people in Eden; then after the Fall He graciously communed with descendants of Seth, then in the land of Canaan with the patriarchs; next, in the tabernacle; then the temple; then ultimately in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, who now dwells in His Church by His Holy Spirit and will return to dwell with His people in the fullness of His glory in the new heavens and the new earth.
