Designing Homes That Support Mental Health and a Rested Nervous System | Ep. 55

Send us Fan Mail What if the way your home is designed is low-key shaping how safe, calm, and regulated your body feels every day? In this episode, Holly Jean Mullen sits down with interior designer Laura McCall of Collected Interiors to explore how trauma-informed interior design helps create spaces that support mental health, reduce stress, and allow the nervous system to settle. Together, they unpack how lighting, layout, materials, sound, and visual environment influence sleep quality, emotional regulation, and daily energy inside the home.  Because wellness doesn’t just happen through routines and habits,  it’s happening in the spaces we live in all day long. In This Episode You’ll learn: • what trauma-informed interior design means in real homes • why some spaces immediately feel calming while others feel overwhelming • how lighting, layout, and sensory inputs affect nervous system regulation • the connection between home environment and mental health • simple ways to create bedrooms that support deeper rest • what buyers are often sensing when a house “just feels right” • where to begin if your home currently feels stressful or chaotic Why This Conversation Matters Most health conversations focus on what we eat, how we move, or the supplements we take. But one of the biggest inputs shaping our physiology every day is our environment. Your home is constantly sending signals to your nervous system. It can either support recovery and calm… or quietly add to your stress load. Understanding how design affects the body helps you make small, intentional changes that improve how your space actually feels to live in, not just how it looks. About Laura McCall: Laura McCall is the founder of Collected Interiors, a design studio focused on creating homes that reflect the stories, values, and lived experience of the people inside them. Her work emphasizes environments that feel welcoming, personal, and supportive of daily life, spaces designed not just for aesthetics, but for wellbeing and nervous system comfort. Hemp Blocks, Earthen Floors, and the Shift Toward Health-First Construction | Ep. 55

Send us Fan Mail Not all homes are created equal. In this episode, I take you with me on a recent jobsite visit with Hiwassee Healthy Homes in Oklahoma City, where we walked through one of their largest hemp block construction projects to date and talked about what it looks like to build differently from the ground up. We discuss why some builders are moving toward vapor-open wall systems, lime-based materials, mold-resistant assemblies, and natural flooring options like earthen floors, and how these approaches are becoming more practical for everyday homeowners, not just niche custom builds. I also share insights from a second builder I met at the Home & Garden Show working with mineral-based rockwool insulation, another example of the growing shift toward durable, lower-toxicity building strategies. This conversation isn’t about one “right” way to build a house. It’s about learning to ask better questions about the environments we live in every day, and understanding how construction choices affect long-term health, comfort, and resilience. Homeopathy Explained: What It Is, How It Works, and Why More People Are Turning to It | Ep. 54

Send us Fan Mail Homeopathy is one of those things a lot of people have heard of, but few people really understand. In this episode, I’m sitting down with local homeopath Sydney Nichols to talk about what homeopathy actually is, how it works, what it can be used for, and why more people are getting curious about it. We talk through acute vs. chronic support, the emotional side of healing, how homeopathy is different from a suppressive approach, and what beginners should know if they want to explore it safely. If homeopathy has ever felt mysterious, confusing, or a little too “out there,” this conversation is a grounded place to start. Indoor Air Quality, Moisture, and HVAC: What Oklahoma Homeowners Need to Know | Ep 53

Send us Fan Mail If you’ve ever thought, “My house just doesn’t feel right… but I can’t put my finger on why,” this episode is for you. Indoor air quality isn’t just about temperature or filters, it’s about how your home breathes. And in Oklahoma, where we live in our air conditioning for months at a time, that matters more than most people realize. In this episode, I’m joined by Tulsa-area HVAC and indoor air quality specialist Mike Guillen, founder of HOPE Heating and Cooling, for a real-world conversation about how HVAC systems affect comfort, moisture, energy use, and long-term home health. This is a building science, down to earth systems conversation touching on airflow, humidity, pressure, ventilation, and maintenance...and how mold often shows up as a signal when something upstream isn’t working the way it should. We talk about the things homeowners usually notice first (stuffy air, uneven temps, humidity, high energy bills), why those are early warning signs, and what actually moves the needle before anyone starts buying gadgets. If you own a home  — especially in Oklahoma, or an older home, a newer “tight” build, or anything in between — this episode will help you understand what’s happening behind the walls and when it’s time to ask better questions. When the Body Can’t Detox: A Mother’s Journey Into Root-Cause Healing, Environmental Toxins & Energy Medicine | Ep 52

Send us Fan Mail What happens when your child’s body can’t detox, and no one can give you real answers? In this episode, I’m joined by Tulsa-based holistic practitioner Samantha Jones, whose journey into root-cause healing began not in a classroom, but in crisis. After her son experienced serious health challenges early in life, Samantha started questioning everything...chronic symptoms, environmental exposures, food reactions, neurological stress, and a medical system that treated symptoms in isolation instead of seeing the whole child. What she uncovered reshaped not only her family’s health, but the way she now supports others. We talk about toxic load, sensitive bodies, and why healing often requires less forcing and more listening. This conversation connects the dots between home environments, detox capacity, energy medicine, and the reality that some bodies simply cannot tolerate the modern load placed on them. We also explore EMFs, chemicals in the home, water quality, food sensitivities, lymphatic support, and why “cleaner” doesn’t always mean better, especially for those who are already overwhelmed. In This Episode, We Cover: Samantha’s journey into holistic, root-cause healingWhy toxic load looks different for every bodyHow home environments quietly impact healthBioenergetic testing and energy-based therapies explained simplyWhy healing is layered, slow, and still meaningfulSamantha Jones / Holistic Health 180 8222 E 103rd St Ste 137, Tulsa, OK 74133 | BodyMasters Gym Your home should help you heal—not hold you back. Christina Hildebrand on CDC Vaccine Schedule Changes, Informed Consent, and Parental Choice | Ep 51

Send us Fan Mail This was an important conversation for me to share. In this episode, I’m joined by Christina Hildebrand from A Voice for Choice to talk through the recent CDC vaccine schedule update: what’s changed, what hasn’t, and why informed consent still matters for families navigating medical decisions. This topic isn’t theoretical for me. My family moved out of California largely because of how health policies and school mandates were impacting real families, and I know many others who’ve faced similar crossroads. These decisions don’t live in headlines, they show up in homes, schools, careers, and deeply personal family choices. If you’re a parent trying to make sense of changing guidance, state-level policies, or the tension between public health recommendations and personal choice, I hope this episode helps you feel less alone and more supported in asking questions.  Resources Mentioned in This Episode A Voice for Choice https://avoiceforchoice.org National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) – State Vaccine Laws & Exemptions https://www.nvic.org/advocacy-state-resourcesConnect with Holly: Website Instagram Your home should help you heal—not hold you back. Hindsight Is 20/20: How Health, Home, and Discernment Shaped My Wellness Journey | Ep 50

Send us Fan Mail This episode opens Season 3, and it’s really about how I got here - at the intersection of health, home, and asking better questions. Over the years, I’ve learned that healing doesn’t usually start with another protocol or perfect plan. It starts with context, awareness, and the willingness to slow down and question the way things have always been done. This season is about connecting dots we’re often told to keep separate...health and home, policy and personal choice, information and lived experience...and reclaiming discernment in a world that moves fast and leaves little room for nuance. If you’ve ever felt like the answers you were given didn’t quite fit, or sensed there was more to the story, I think you’ll feel at home here. I’m really glad you’re listening. Listeners will learn how healthy homes are designed, what building assemblies and details matter most for mold prevention, why subcontractors often become the biggest challenge in healthy home construction, and how budget, timelines, and square footage must shift when you prioritize a healthier indoor environment. Holly also breaks down why truly qualified healthy home builders are rare, what questions to ask before hiring one, and why a third-party consultant is essential if your builder isn’t already trained in high-performance or low-toxin construction.
