Conversation with Author and Creator of All This Math Akil Parker!

I hate math! We ain't going to use this math anyway, so why do we have to learn it?! How many times have we heard these negative statements and more about the dreaded and most needed subject, math. Well Mr. Akil Parker the veteran High school math teacher, author and creator of All This Math is here on the show to eradicate that bad talk that we have around math. He is dropping the jewels and helping us get to the core of where that disdain for math came from that we are plagued with in the Black community. In addition to that, he's giving us the empowerment tools that we need to rid ourselves of that thinking, so that we can learn to embrace math and not run away from it. This is the episode in which you need your notebooks and pens fa real, fa real!!!

Be sure to follow and subscribe to Akil Parker's Youtube and Social Media @ All This Math. Remember to purchase his book How To Use All This Math Vol. 1. Also, if you're in the Baltimore area, sign your children up for his Histematics summer program. Histematics is using African-American History to make math more relevant.

Conversation with world traveler and author Taye Uhuru!

Been around the world ya ya yaaa! That's the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the conversation I had with brotha Taye Uhuru. It was such an engaging discussion he and I had in which one of the things he casually said is that he's been to 70+ countries! Of course his travels did not start as an adult it all started with his foundation of being raised by his parents in the inner city and suburbs of Cleveland,Ohio and having to move around alot and his mother working for the Greyhound bus station allowed him to get outside of Cleveland at a very early age. These rich experiences, having a close knit family that valued education and love of Black history was the gateway into Taye writing his first book entitled The Afro Set Black Nationalist. What you need to do is make sure you grab your notebooks and pens because Taye is dropping the gems that we need to help us get rid of the fear and develop the mindset that is needed, to help create the culture of literacy that we once had in the Black community.

Conversation with author of the book Hidden In Plain Sight Kaleema Overton Ameen!

In this episode, I had the absolute pleasure with talking to North Carolina native Kaleema Overton Ameen on her journey to becoming an author of a book that deals with one of the most controversial topics of our time narcissism. Of course she starts us off with her strong family roots and what led her into becoming a Federal Policy Analyst. Then she gives us ways we can help our young people decide on the career they want by focusing on their strengths. Finally, we spend the remaining part of the show diving into her divorce from a narcissist, which led her into telling her story that started with articles written in the highly acclaimed Muslim Journal and then turning those articles into her phenomenal book Hidden In Plain Sight. This is one of the most empowering episodes that you'll ever hear on Real Reading Talk so please have your notebooks and pens on deck.

Budget cuts in schools=bye bye to beneficial programs

Budget cuts in schools=bye bye to beneficial programs

In this episode, I'm discussing the recent article in our local online news platform cleveland.com that talks about the budget cuts that will be taking place this September in districts across the country. The money from the American Rescue Plan Act dollars are drying up and of course that means take away Out Of School Time programs and summer learning programs. These are the programs that was created for our underserved population of children which majority comprise of Black children. My question what is our response Black people? Listen to my breakdown and continuous reminders on how we need to collectively educate our own children and seriously consider a mass exodus away from this educational system that was not created to truly educate and benefit our Black children.

The child who is not embraced by the village, will burn it down to feel its warmth.

The child who is not embraced by the village, will burn it down to feel its warmth.

The child who is not embraced by the village, will burn it down it to feel its warmth is an African proverb that reminds us of the importance of giving love, validation and grace to our children. Unfortunately Black children across this nation in particular, have been used to being dealt with in a punitive way. In the Black community we've adopted the ideology that our children have to be talked to harshly, degraded, condemned and beaten in order for them to be respectful and turn out to be great adults. Well I'm addressing this issue in this latest episode of Real Reading Talk. I talk about where that mentality comes from, how it's truly a disservice to our children and how we need to rid ourselves of this thinking because it's counterproductive and outright toxic to our children. We are paying for it dearly! This is certainly an episode that you do not want to miss.
