Rediscovering Latinidad

Rediscovering Latinidad

Rediscovering Latinidad is made with love and dedication to the art of family history. Too often the search for family history can seem Eurocentric and inefficient for those identifying as Latiné, LatinX, and anywhere in between. Let’s share our stories, our resources, and discuss why this all matters. In the search for who we are, we can understand more from our ancestors and their stories.

Season 8 Episode 11: Voces Pequeñas, Raices Profundos

In this special anthology episode of Rediscovering Latinidad, we turn the microphone over to the next generation. Voces Pequeñas, Raíces Profundas brings together Latino children and teens ages 5–16 to share their thoughts on identity, culture, language, family, and what it means to grow up Latino today. Through honest, funny, thoughtful, and sometimes emotional conversations, these young voices reflect on: speaking Spanish (or not)family traditionsfavorite foodspride and belongingstereotypesschool experiencesancestry and heritageand how they see themselves in a changing worldSome answers are hilarious. Some are deeply insightful. All of them remind us that Latinidad is constantly evolving across generations. As a genealogy and heritage podcast, we often focus on the past: our ancestors, migration stories, and family histories. But this episode asks us to think about the future too. Who are the future ancestors being raised right now? And what will they remember about this moment in history? Season 8 Episode 10 El Crimen Real: Vanessa Guillén: Justicia, Silencio y el Sistema que la falló

On today's episode we discuss the case of Vanessa Guillén, a 20-year-old Latina soldier whose disappearance and death at Fort Hood in 2020 led to national outrage, widespread protests, and a reckoning within the U.S. military. Vanessa’s story is not only a true crime case; it is a story about silence, fear, and the systems that failed to protect her. We walk through the timeline of her disappearance, the investigation that followed, and the shocking details that came to light. We also discuss the allegations of harassment she shared with her family before her death, and the broader culture within the military that has left many service members feeling unsafe or unheard. Most importantly, we reflect on the impact of her case: how her family, especially her sister Lupe Guillén, transformed grief into advocacy, pushing for accountability and reform through what became known as the I Am Vanessa Guillén Act. This episode is handled with care and respect for Vanessa, her family, and all those who have experienced similar injustices. Season 8 Episode 9 Queenship pt 2 Reina, Madre, Imperio: El Legado de la Reina Isabella y su linaje

On today's episode we explore the powerful intersection of genealogy, history, and queenship with renowned historians Susan Abernethy and Ellie Woodacre.Together, we dive into the life and legacy of Isabella I of Castile, one of the most influential monarchs in European history, and trace the extraordinary lineage that followed through her daughters and granddaughters. From Juana of Castile (whose story has long been shaped by narratives of madness and control) to Catherine of Aragon (whose marriage to Henry VIII would alter the course of English and religious history), we examine how these women navigated power, expectation, and legacy. We also explore the next generation, including figures like Mary I of England, whose reign continues to be debated and reinterpreted.Through the lens of queenship, this episode asks deeper questions about:How power is inherited and exercised through family linesHow women in history are remembered, misunderstood, or erasedHow genealogy shapes not just families but entire empiresThis conversation reminds us that royal family trees are not just about lineage; they are about influence, narrative, and the lasting impact of women whose lives shaped history across generations. Season 8 Episode 8 John Phillip Santos, La raza cósmica a los 100 años y nuestros 100 capítulos

In this milestone 100th episode of Rediscovering Latinidad, we reflect on identity, history, and the stories that shape who we are, both collectively and personally. We are honored to be joined by acclaimed author and journalist John Phillip Santos, whose work explores memory, ancestry, and the evolving meaning of Latinidad across generations. We discuss his books Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation and The Farthest Home Is in an Empire of Fire, and how storytelling can preserve the histories that are often left undocumented. This conversation takes place at a powerful cultural moment:100 years after the publication of La Raza Cósmica by José Vasconcelos. Together, we explore how ideas of race, identity, and cultural synthesis have evolved over the past century, and what they mean for us today. In the final segment of the episode, we turn inward. The three cohosts reflect on the journey of reaching 100 episodes: what it has meant to build this space, the conversations that stayed with us, and the episodes that defined our growth along the way. This episode is about legacy. About the stories we inherit, the ones we tell, and the ones we’re still learning how to understand. Season 8 Episode 7 Club de Lectura: Archives of Unknown Universes

On today's episode, we dive into Archive of Unknown Universes by Rubén Reyes Jr., a speculative fiction collection that explores alternate realities, diaspora identity, and the fragile turning points that shape our lives. Through stories rooted in Salvadoran history, migration, and memory, this book asks a powerful question:What if our lives (and our family histories) had unfolded differently? As a podcast centered on Latino genealogy and heritage, this conversation goes beyond the page. We reflect on the real-life “alternate universes” within our own family trees, the moments where everything could have changed. A decision to leave or stay. A war survived. A path taken.....or not taken. For many of us, especially those shaped by migration, those alternate realities are not abstract, they’re incredibly real. This episode explores how speculative fiction can help us understand identity, ancestry, and the invisible threads connecting past, present, and future. For anyone exploring their roots, this episode reframes genealogy as something deeper than names and dates. It becomes a way of understanding possibility, loss, survival, and the many lives that exist just beyond the one we know. If one moment in your family’s past had gone differently…who would you be today? “Our lives are just one version of many possible histories, and our family trees are the evidence.” Watch Edward's free online webinar: "How Full-Text Search Can Find Latin American Genealogy"  https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/how-full-text-search-can-uncover-latin-american-genealogy Read Edward's blog Genetic Funhouse about his latest adventures with Full-Text Search: "Can AI Test for Limipeza de Sangre?" "The Browser History That Led to Rubens’s Cathedral" Try out FamilySearch.org for yourself! This week is our bye week, and a chance for our audience to re-listen to last season's most loved episode! n this heartfelt episode, we dive into the world of no sabo kids—a term often used to describe Latinos who didn’t grow up fluent in Spanish. Together, we explore what it really means beyond the stereotype. Two of our co-hosts share their own journeys as no sabo kids, reflecting on how their experiences with language and identity shape the way they move through their identity. We’re also joined by two friends who claim the no sabo identity, offering their perspective on culture, connection, and pride in heritage. To round out the conversation, we talk with social media personality Maya Murillo, who has sparked national conversations with her humor and honesty about growing up no sabo. This episode isn’t just about language—it’s about belonging, healing generational gaps, and celebrating the many ways Latinidad shows up across families. Whether you grew up speaking Spanish, English, Spanglish, or somewhere in between, this conversation will leave you feeling seen and connected. Season 8 Episode 4 La Dra. Virginia Sánchez Korrol sobre la historia puertorriqueña, la academia y la ruptura de barreras.

In this special episode of Rediscovering Latinidad, we sit down with trailblazing historian and scholar Dr. Virginia Sánchez Korrol, a pioneer in Puerto Rican Studies whose work has helped shape how Puerto Rican history and diaspora are understood today. From her early life and academic journey to becoming one of the foundational voices in the field, Dr. Sánchez Korrol shares what it meant to pursue Puerto Rican history at a time when it was often overlooked or dismissed in academic spaces. She reflects on the barriers she faced, the institutions she helped build, and the importance of preserving our stories through both scholarship and community memory. We also explore her groundbreaking book From Colonia to Community, her work documenting Puerto Rican life in New York City, and how her research continues to influence new generations of scholars and genealogists. Finally, we discuss her involvement in the 2021 remake of West Side Story, and the significance of reclaiming Puerto Rican narratives and representation in mainstream media.
