ZEBx: The Zero Emissions Building Exchange

We bring together people from across the building industry to identify solutions and opportunities in the zero emission buildings space. In our podcasts we speak with people across the BC building industry and beyond, and learn how they navigate the barriers to advance the development of cost-effective, attractive, zero emission buildings at scale. ZEBx is a centre designed to rapidly accelerate the knowledge, capacity and passion for zero emission buildings and is part of the Metro Vancouver Zero Emissions Innovation Centre.

John Horgan Campus: Prefab Mass Timber Innovation - ZEBx Decarb Lunch Apr 17, 2026

This ZEBx Decarb Lunch explored how zero carbon buildings can be delivered faster, more efficiently, and with stronger performance outcomes through prefabrication, integrated modelling, and mass timber innovation. The Royal Roads University John Horgan Campus building is a recently completed (summer 2025) 5-storey academic building with a full mass timber structure and an innovative prefabricated wall panel system. The project is all electric, ZCB Design certified, and designed to comply with LEED v4. Presenters highlighted practical and transferable solutions relevant to mainstream projects. For example, how a kit-of-parts façade strategy reduced thermal bridging, improved airtightness continuity, protected CLT slab edges from moisture risk, and replaced conventional curtain wall components with lower-carbon timber alternatives. From proposal to installation in just seven months, this session explored how digital modelling, prefabrication workflows, and early-stage coordination made the project possible. Attendees gained actionable insights into what made the project buildable, the setbacks encountered, and how similar prefabricated approaches can be adapted to mainstream developments, making it ideal for developers, designers, contractors, owners, and policy professionals seeking practical pathways to faster, lower-carbon construction. Speakers: Elise Woestyn, Director, Building Performance, hcma architecture + design Franz Greenwood, Architect, hcma architecture + design Simon Wong, Mass Timber Consultant, Stantec Consulting Ltd Co-Hosts: Alex Hebert, ZEB Learning Centre Manager, BCIT Thank you to BC Hydro and the City of Vancouver for the financial support that enables us to make this event free of charge.

Balancing Whole Life Carbon in BC Step Code Buildings Past Event - ZEBx Decarb Lunch Nov 24, 2025

As the building sector strives to play a more active role in curbing global warming while also adapting to a changing climate, it’s becoming clear that some of the metrics guiding our progress—energy, cost, and carbon—can no longer be treated separately. Join ZEBx for a Decarb Lunch where reload and UBC Campus & Community Planning unveil findings from an investigation into how best to push forward with the higher levels of the BC Energy Step Code and BC Zero Carbon Step Code when cost and whole life carbon are also considered.  To meet its climate action goals while keeping new construction cost-effective, UBC commissioned a study to examine the impact of raising envelope performance standards, balancing carbon and cost. Led by reLoad in collaboration with Ryder Architecture, Glotman Simpson, and Heatherbrae Builders, the study evaluated envelope options for two building archetypes—a six-storey wood-frame MURB and a high-rise concrete tower—to determine which combinations of assemblies would yield the best trade-offs between energy efficiency, embodied carbon, operational emissions, and construction cost.  What envelope choices deliver the lowest total carbon and best overall outcomes? Does the TEDI make sense when the whole life carbon lens is applied? How might future codes evolve to reflect this new balance of performance and practicality?   Don’t miss this timely conversation about a topic that is poised to shape the next generation of low-carbon building design in BC and beyond.  Speakers: Ralph Wells, Community Climate and Energy Manager, UBC Campus & Community Planning Martina Soderlund, Principal and Founder, reLoad Sustainable Design Hugh Nolan, Building Energy and Carbon Analyst, reLoad Sustainable Design

Advancing the BC Step Code in the East Kootenays Past Event - ZEBx Decarb Lunch Nov 13, 2025

To many, building to BC Energy Step Code 4 and BC Zero Carbon Step Code Emissions Level (EL) 4 for Part 9 homes can seem ambitious — especially in the cold, cost-conscious East Kootenays. Yet real-world experience shows that high-performance, low-carbon homes can be built cost-effectively, comfortably, and reliably when design, construction, and energy advising work hand in hand.   In this Decarb Lunch, Bruce Murdoch of Kootenay Country Homes will share insights from two recent net-zero projects that demonstrate what’s possible when performance and practicality align — from right-sizing mechanical systems to building crew capacity and maintaining cost control. His story also highlights his personal journey from early hesitation to confident leadership in high-performance homebuilding, showing how hands-on experience can transform uncertainty into trust in better building practices.   Complementing this perspective, Kevin D. Brown, a Passive House designer and consultant, will draw on his experience delivering energy-efficient and low-carbon homes across Alberta and BC. He’ll offer proven strategies for achieving strong energy performance and emissions reductions without breaking budgets — emphasizing the importance of early collaboration and integrated design.   Join us to hear how builders and designers are proving that Step 4 + EL-4 performance is achievable, cost-effective, and ready for mainstream adoption in communities across BC. Speakers: Bruce Murdoch – Owner, K-Country Homes Kevin D Brown – Principal, think Design Consult
