Rethinking Navigation for the Blind: Robotic Guide Dogs

If you're blind or partially sighted, the white cane or guide dog remain the undisputed pillars to independent travel. That being said, cutting edge research at major universities aims to shake up the orientation and mobility landscape with new, high-tech travel tools. The research is still ongoing, but the discussion is fascinating, so Grant Hardy went exploring. Shiqi Zhang, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Binghamton University, shares his research into robotic guide dogs and how their language and sensory abilities have huge potential to improve independent travel for the blind and low vision community. Reuth Mirsky, an Assistant Professor in the Computer Sciences Department at Tufts University, discusses some of the foundational research she's conducting on robotics, particularly surrounding intelligent disobedience. And Double Tap co-host Shaun Preece gives his perspective on high tech travel solutions and how far we still have to go before even considering giving up our trusted canes and guide dogs. How do we educate people about eye health? How do we prevent vision loss, and how can we better support Canadians already living with it? These are all questions that MP Judy Sgro is asking to be solved in Canada’s first-ever National Strategy for Eye care, that was tabled in government on June 3rd, 2026. Jennifer Jones, CEO of Fighting Blindness Canada, is part of a coalition of organizations who are sharing their input on the new strategy.  Plus, Greg David, Communications Specialist at AMI, shares his personal interest in the strategy and how it relates to the work being done by AMI.  Joeita Gupta chats with Judy, Jennifer, and Greg to learn about this new government initiative and how it will work to support Canadians living with vision loss. The Access Go Mobile App: All Aboard

Daily commutes can be quite stressful, and that stress is heightened for blind and low-vision commuters when transportation is inaccessible and wayfinding is unintuitive. Kelly MacDonald explores what’s out there to help the community with these challenges. Some of us, like Jason Fayre, are working to make public transportation easier to navigate. Jason has zeroed in on the Greater Toronto Area’s GO Transit system and released his app, Access GO Mobile, providing real-time information in a clean, accessible mobile interface. Terry Bray is on board for better trip-planning options. He is blind, a frequent traveler, and a lifetime transit user who has been around long enough to appreciate the kind of convenience the Access GO Mobile app can provide. Debbie Gillespie has advised on several transit boards and consulted on accessible wayfinding systems for years. She is an expert in the topic of transportation and stresses the importance of safety around independent travel for blind and low-vision travelers.
