Reimagining the Alliance Educator

Alliance College-Ready Public Schools

Educators across the country are dealing with a burnout crisis, as the aftermath of COVID-19 has highlighted significant learning loss among scholars, and increased demands and stress on educators. Alarmingly, in the state of California, one in five teachers is now considering leaving the profession within the next three years. Alliance College-Ready Public Schools has been serving Los Angeles County for 20 years, and was founded on the belief that all children are capable of learning and achieving at high levels – regardless of their income level, ability, or socio-economic background. As one of the largest, most successful nonprofit public school networks in the nation, they are working to solve the teacher burnout problem with their innovative pilot program, Reimagining the Alliance Educator. Through an exhaustive, research based process, Alliance has more than doubled the planning time for teachers, and increased both academic intervention and enrichment opportunities for scholars across their pilot schools. Already it's making a big difference in the work-life balance of their teachers, and is directly impacting the lives of the scholars they serve.  Hosted by Alliance VP of Network Initiatives Sonja Grant, this 8-part series features interviews with principals, teachers, and scholars from two middle schools and one high school who have piloted a new schedule change program tailored specifically for each school community. Follow the inspiring journey, and learn how your school can apply the lessons to reimagine education. * Reimagining the Alliance Educator: The Podcast is a Special Limited Series, produced by the Alliance College-Ready Public School’s Home Office team, with producer and writer Monique Madrid, Jass Stewart, and Sonja Grant. Sound and editing is done by Jacob Tummino and Travis Thompson. Pablo Villavicencio is Alliance’s CEO. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Expanded teacher planning time creates opportunities for added scholar enrichment and intervention programs

This week, we talk about how giving teachers expanded planning time gives schools an opportunity to add enrichment programs for their scholars. That’s exactly what Valera Middle Academy is doing. Now, Valera’s teachers are now able dig deeper into lessons without having to worry about also teaching an elective course with a whole different set of scholars. Yes, this meant hiring additional teachers, but as Executive Director “JT” Tiongco states, “That just led to greater benefits for our kids.”  Valera’s goal is to get kids excited about coming back to school. No small feat, but the added enrichment and elective opportunities like art, STEM, health, robotics, as well as the camaraderie and connection of sports, is helping those kids, who may not be traditionally inspired by English or math, get excited about school. As Principal Erik Carlstone reminded us, "We often focus on academic rigor, but at the end of the day, what else is there and what else can the kid get excited about?” In the first year of piloting the program, Valera has created a school environment where scholars feel more connected and that they belong. It's working not only socio-emotionally, but academically as well, as their initial iReady reports are showing their English language learners have already exceeded typical growth for the year. You ARE A College Student

In our season finale, the staff at Alliance Dr. Olga Mohan High School discuss the programmatic costs they’ve added in order to support the Reimagining the Alliance Educator pilot. Besides bringing on an additional teacher to keep class sizes down, they’re turning to the strong partnership they have with L.A. Trade Tech, so they can direct scholars towards the dual enrollment courses they’re now able to offer.  Dual Enrollment gives scholars the incredible opportunity to take college classes while they’re still in high school. And as you’ll hear, these scholars really do recognize the potential in this program. As 11th grader Eric says, “I would be a fool if I didn't take a college course next year, because one they're free and two, they help boost my GPA tremendously. They look amazing on college transcripts, because you look ambitious and just an overall go-getter.”  So yes, the Reimagining the Alliance Educator pilot program greatly benefit the teachers by giving them double planning time from past years (in Mohan’s case), but it's clear that it's helping create a stronger sense of wellbeing for the kids as well. Mohan High School is seeing scholars becoming more excited about school, as their needs are met in new ways. Principal Andrew King tells us, “When you look at their research when it comes to dual enrollment, the reality is that there's so much benefit to students enrolled in dual enrollment classes for a variety of reasons. The first being that you immediately create a college going culture starting day one because they're not high school students anymore. They are college students. For those students that never thought they were going to be a college student, I constantly remind them, “But you are. You are a college student. You're taking college classes!”  Hosted on Acast.
