    Healing Heart Memory

"What the mind forgets, the heart remembers." — Donna Woolam Series Context: An episode of The He(art) and Science of Transformation series on the ReNew Your Mind podcast. Have you ever found yourself in an insanity loop, repeating the same behaviors and wondering, "If I'm so smart, why is this so hard?". We often carry heart memories—subconscious triggers from past experiences that signal danger to our brains, even when we are safe. In this episode, I share my personal journey with physical health and safety to illustrate how our bodies try to protect us in ways that can actually sabotage our growth. It is time to stop the cycle of shame and start the journey toward true, surrendered transformation. The Four Pillars The Reality of Heart Memory: Your body and heart retain emotional imprints of past events, leading to physical "somatic responses" that occur without a conscious reference point. The Science of the Response Loop: The amygdala acts as an emotion center, releasing chemicals that trigger anxiety or fear to keep you safe, often locking you into repetitive behavioral loops. Breaking the Shame Gridlock: Shame is not a weapon to be used against yourself; it is an indicator of imbalance that physically locks up your logical thinking. The Path of "Altar-ed" Living: True transformation requires moving from "self-sourcing" to surrendering your identity and habits at the altar, allowing God to align your flesh with your spirit. Detailed Timestamps [1:36] Defining "Heart Memory": Why we feel emotions without a clear reference. [4:34] Somatic Responses: How the body signals danger through physical symptoms. [5:31] The Response Loop: Understanding why we repeat the same behavioral cycles. [7:51] Donna’s Story: The connection between trauma, safety, and physical weight. [18:15] Altar-ed Living: The art of surrendering your identity to the Father. [19:20] The Father’s Image: Understanding God’s commitment to your restoration. Why Am I Stuck?

"For the good that I want to do, I do not do. But I practice the very evil that I do not want." — Romans 7:19 (AMP) An episode of "The He(art) and Science of Transformation" series on the ReNew Your Mind podcast. Have you ever felt like you’re too smart to be this stuck? You’ve read the books, you’ve memorized the scriptures, and you know the habits you should have—yet your daily actions remain in default mode. In this episode, we dig into the Response Matrix to understand the biological and spiritual battle for your mind. It’s time to move from being a prisoner of habit to becoming a practitioner of intentional, God-given choice. The Four Pillars The Romans 7 Struggle: Understanding that the battle between our "new nature" and our "members" is a documented spiritual and biological reality. Brain Budgeting: Why the brain views change as "expensive," consuming 20% of your energy and often defaulting to autopilot to save resources. The Neural War: How the basal ganglia (autopilot) and the prefrontal cortex (decision-making) compete for control of your actions. The Decision Audit: Learning to identify if your responses are Default (habitual), Reactive (emotional), or Intentional (aligned with faith). [0:00] Introduction to the Response Matrix and aligning faith with daily action. [1:53] Diving into Romans 7: The Apostle Paul’s struggle with doing what he didn’t want to do. [4:13] Homeostasis vs. Allostasis: The science behind why change feels so difficult. [6:12] The cost of transformation: Why your brain thinks learning is "expensive". [7:18] Dopamine Addiction: How social media and distraction keep us from deep change. [8:30] Meet the players: The Basal Ganglia (Autopilot) vs. the Prefrontal Cortex (The Executive). [11:13] The Decision Audit: Categorizing your default, reactive, and intentional responses. [13:46] Practical tools: Using the Journey to Wholeness reframe for permanent change. How to Rewire Your Mind

"We are taking our thoughts, looking at them, and seeing if they are in agreement with what God’s Word says."An episode of "The He(art) and Science of Transformation" series on the ReNew Your Mind podcast. The core transformation in this episode is moving from being a passenger to becoming an active participant in your mental and spiritual health. Donna bridges the gap between the Bible and neuroscience, revealing that renewing your mind is not just a spiritual platitude but a physical process. By understanding Metacognition, LTD (Long-Term Depression), and LTP (Long-Term Potentiation), listeners learn how to take every thought captive to dismantle toxic mental superhighways and pave new, God-ordained neural pathways. The theological heart of the message is that God’s Word doesn’t just compete with science—it proves it. The call to action is to move out of the reactive amygdala and into the prefrontal cortex, where conscious, Spirit-led decisions lead to a whole life. Have you ever wondered if the renewing of your mind mentioned in Romans 12:2 is actually possible, or is it just a nice sentiment? In this episode, we dive into the Revelation Switch—the moment where neuroscience meets the Holy Spirit. I’m sharing how your brain physically changes when you decide to think about what you’re thinking about. It’s time to stop living in the fear and flight of the amygdala and step into the intentional life God ordained for you.The Four Pillars: Metacognition and Captivity Understanding the scientific process of thinking about what you're thinking about to fulfill the command to take every thought captive. LTD: The Pruning Process How the brain carves away irrelevant synaptic connections, much like the Father prunes the branches in John 15 to ensure healthy growth. LTP: Creating New Highways The power of Long-Term Potentiation to build new neural pathways (superhighways) based on truth rather than toxic loops. The Homeostasis Hurdle Recognizing that your brain seeks safety in the familiar, even if the familiar is unhealthy, and how to push past that resistance. Stop the Spiral | Break Negative Thought Cycles

"I began to come into agreement with what someone else was saying about who I was... you begin to believe a lie about who you are and what you were put on the earth to do." An episode of The He(art) and Science of Transformation series on the ReNew Your Mind podcast. We’ve all been there: a trusted friend turns away, a marriage crumbles, or a toxic workplace slowly chips away at your soul until you don't recognize the person in the mirror. Your brain, trying to protect you, builds a framework to define those painful bricks, labeling you "unlovable" or "a failure" just to make sense of the hurt. But those labels are lies. Transformation isn't about trying harder; it's about flipping the Revelation Switch—letting God’s light expose the cracks in your reasoning so He can pour in oil and wine to heal the deepest parts of your heart. You don't have to stay stuck in a chemical cascade of anxiety. You can unshame yourself by aligning your thoughts with the truth of who God says you are today.I know what it’s like to feel beat up, angry, and betrayed. I spent months living in a toxic environment where the people I trusted to have my back simply didn’t. Slowly, I started believing their version of me instead of God’s. If you’ve ever felt dismayed by your own life or trapped in a mental loop of regret, this episode is for you. We’re going to talk about how to stop the chemical cascade of fear and how to finally peel off the labels that no longer belong to you.The Four Pillars: The Meaning-Making Machine Your brain is an efficiency seeker that quickly labels new pain based on old wounds, often keeping you trapped in a "reasoning box". The Revelation Switch The moment God’s light breaks through our limited, "darkly-seen" perspective to reveal the absolute truth of our situation. The Science of the Jesus Prayer Using deep breathing and the name of Jesus to physically flush anxiety-triggering chemicals out of your system. The Unshaming Investigation A practical process of asking, "Is this thought based in reality?" and "What does God say instead?" to dismantle the power of shame. Timestamps: 00:23 – Why your brain is always working to make meaning—even if it's wrong. 02:20 – The "bad restaurant" effect: How one bad experience labels your whole future. 03:10 – Why even AI "hallucinates," and why we can't trust our own skewed reality. 04:02 – Isaiah 53: The "ignorance" of assuming God is the one striking us down. 08:28 – My personal story of betrayal and the months it took to find my footing again. 11:54 – Step 1: Searching for "tangible proof" vs. someone else's opinion. 13:51 – How to stop a panic attack by clearing your chemical triggers with oxygen. 15:36 – Peeling off the 25-year-old labels that are coloring your world today. 17:13 – A simple prayer for when you don't know the Bible: "What have I been believing that isn't true?". Break the Cycle | The Revelation Switch

"We see things not as they are, but as we are." An episode of "The He(art) and Science of Transformation" series on the ReNew Your Mind podcast. Have you ever wondered why you keep making the same decisions, even when they lead to the same old results? We all operate within a "Reasoning Box"—a collection of every thought, attitude, and cultural identity we’ve gathered since birth. This box influences everything we do today, but it often limits us to a myopic point of view. To experience true transformation, we must flip the Revelation Switch. By bringing our ingrained beliefs into the light of God's Word, we can stop operating out of old strategies and start living with the clarity of His perspective. The Reasoning Box Defined: Your brain stores every relationship, job, and family experience, creating a "box" that dictates your current determinations. The Danger of Casting Off Restraint: Without divine revelation, we become like Samson or the people in the Book of Judges—tossed by emotions and doing only what feels right to our own hearts. The Revelation Switch: When we align our personal history with the Word of God, "the switch turns on in the dark room," allowing us to see truth instead of supposition. Breaking the Cycle of Tradition: Much like the story of cutting the ends off a ham for a pan that is no longer too small, we must identify which beliefs served a past season but are weighing us down today. TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Understanding the "Reasoning Box" and how it influences today's decisions. 2:30 – Why a lack of vision or revelation causes people to cast off restraint. 3:54 – Lessons from the Book of Judges: The chaos of doing what is right in our own eyes. 5:52 – How to find a "grounding stone" to avoid being tossed by emotional waves. 6:46 – The Ham Story: Identifying outdated strategies and traditional beliefs.10:03 – Fresh revelation for new seasons: Why 2026 requires different answers than 199011:30 – Practical Exercise: Distinguishing between truth, reality, and supposition. ReClaim Your Mind | How to Stop Negative Self Talk

”Every person in the world that has ever lived since Adam and Eve has been a victim of identity theft.” Welcome to episode three of The He(art) and Science of Transformation on the Renew Your Mind podcast. We are continuing our journey toward wholeness by tackling a foundational issue: Identity Theft. From the beginning of creation, the enemy has employed a strategy to steal our understanding of who we are and, more importantly, who God is. As we discussed in the first episode of this series, we all navigate life within a Reasoning Box. Inside this box, we store interpretive glasses that trigger split-second decisions. Often, these decisions are based on a broken identity rather than the truth of God’s Word. Our struggle with identity theft began with the serpent’s question: “Did God really say?” The enemy didn't just question our identity; he caused us to question God’s character. "Is God truly good?" is the silent question underlying every challenging season of our lives. Spiritual authorities target our origin to convince us we are either “too much” or “not enough,” aiming to keep us stagnant and fearful. In Ephesians 6, we learn that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of wickedness. When we attempt to win these battles in our own strength or on the enemy’s home turf, we will lose every time. This is why we must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. There is a fascinating intersection between faith and neuroscience here. The brain accepts our spoken words as data; it often cannot distinguish between imagination and truth. Our declarations become the architecture of our mental landscape. Jesus warned that we will be held accountable for every idle word. This isn't about "manifesting" a result through our own power; it is about aligning our speech with the Word of God. When we repeat His principles, our lives begin to change. The question is simple: Whose words are you repeating? [01:24] – The Reasoning Box Refresher: How life experiences, culture, and family history create our internal boundaries. [02:27] – The Interpretive Lens: How our brain makes split-second decisions to keep us “safe,” even when our lives feel out of order. [04:36] – The Original Identity Break: Exploring the fall in the garden and the enemy’s attempt to besmirch God’s character. [07:33] – Spiritual Authorities and Origin: Understanding the forces that speak lies to the core of our being. [10:15] – Jesus and Identity: How the enemy used the “If you are…” strategy in the wilderness to challenge Christ's origin. Unmasking the Soul | How to Stop Pretending

”If even my AI cannot tell the difference between who I am, my actual face, and my actual voice, what makes me think that I can in my own strength and ability truly know my own heart?” In a world increasingly saturated by AI-generated perfection, we often find ourselves caught in a masquerade of our own making. I’ve spent years navigating the exhausting cycle of swapping one mask for another—from the "good girl" to the "competent professional"—all while fearing that my true self wasn’t enough. Transformation begins when we stop hiding. In this episode of the Renew Your Mind podcast, we explore how to peel back the veneers of shame, fear, and tradition to stand unveiled before the only One who truly knows us. From my earliest days, I remember pretending to be someone else—a fear-based attempt to be "good enough." I see a long track of "pretend" following the girl who became the woman I am today, always believing that if anyone really knew me, I would fail their approval test. For those of us seeking to walk with God, the attempt to live out of harmony with the woman He crafted you to be is profoundly exhausting. Eventually, it causes your world to fracture. Humanity has been hiding since the Garden of Eden, driven by a cocktail of anger, fear, and shame. It isn’t just the mask of shame we wear, but the mask of blame. We hide our brokenness by blaming others for our unwillingness to show up authentically. The serpent blamed God, Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. Though it wasn't His fault, the Lord took all of it on Himself so we wouldn't have to hide any longer. From ancient caste systems to modern 24/7 social media input, we are constantly told we aren't "enough." We adopt labels we didn't choose—political, societal, even church affiliations—because we all want to belong. We gather modern "fig leaves" to cover our nakedness instead of telling the truth. True transformation occurs when we stop being "actors" in our own lives and allow God to pull the scales from our eyes. Only when we hear His voice speaking truth over us can we be free. As Paul writes: "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18) It isn't a generic truth that sets us free; it is the truth that Jesus speaks—the truth we choose to believe—that breaks the chains. [00:00] – The AI Paradox: A personal story of technology failing to recognize a real face and voice, prompting a deeper look at the heart. [02:43] – Defining the Masquerade: How the cycle of “imagined piety” mirrors our daily masks. [03:48] – The Struggle with Vulnerability: Why it is hard to let people see the “cracks” inside of us. [04:42] – The Veneer of Competency: Confessing how a childhood of lack led to a lifetime of “putting on a face.” [07:28] – The First Masks: Examining how Adam, Eve, and Cain used hiding and lies as a response to sin. [09:27] – Fear and Tradition: Analyzing how Abraham and Isaac used “half-truth” masks for protection. [11:20] – The Unveiled Face: Contrasting the fading glory of Moses’ veil with the permanent freedom in Christ. [13:14] – Inauthenticity and Fractures: What happens when the world cracks because you aren’t living as your true self. Finished Figuring It Out | Stop Overthinking

” I am finished with this trying to figure it out on my own. I am tired of not being able to find the answers.” An episode of “The He(art) and Science of Transformation” series on the Renew Your Mind podcast. I reached a point where I had to admit that I was tired of not finding answers and exhausted from trying to be the “strong, supportive, courageous one” for everyone else. In this episode, we explore the mental architecture that keeps us stuck and the specific moment of transformation that shifted me from a state of powerless grief to a life of abundant grace. Admitting you don’t have all the answers is the first step toward healing. I call it “Self-sourcing”. It is the the exhausting hustle of trying to manage life through your own strength rather than living out of the grace of God. I’ve discovered self-sourcing is born out of fear. It’s that voice that says, ‘No one is coming to my rescue, so I’ll have to protect myself.’ Oh, we don’t think that’s what it is. In fact, we call it self-sufficiency and resilience, and being low-maintenance. And for many, especially women who have endured some soft of life-altering trauma or experience like death, betrayal, or abandonment, it becomes the fuel we burn to simply make it through the day. But at night, when no one is around, we define “the truth”; we feel alone and vulnerable. These thoughts and responses are born out of the mental filter we have created throughout our entire life; usually beginning at about age 4. I call it The Reasoning Box. And in our safe Reasoning Box, our brain has created meaning out of our life experiences. And these filters dictate our responses. Science calls it homeostasis: the mechanism which maintains balance. Our experiences create a mental filter that dictates our responses. Our brain uses homeostasis to keep us “safe,” even if our current normal is dark or disturbing. “This, this, and this happened before, and it meant this, so when something feels the same, it must mean that, too.” Maybe you had a disapproving family member or teacher, and their comments caused you to feel that no matter what you did, you were never good enough. Now, as an adult, any form of critique feels like criticism, and you respond by retreating or retaliating. (Whatever your life experience has shown you to do.) And without some kind of intervention, we will continue to respond and react the same way, without even knowing why. I call that process of intervention, The Revelation Switch. And it isn’t about just getting more information from Google, or Bing, or Chat. Because information will never create transformation. Natural thought processes cannot give us the victory we hunger for. Scripture tells us that without revelation we will perish. And that revelation switch is flipped when we trade our routine, practiced, and life-make-sense beliefs for a renewed mind. We all come to a point when we must choose what kind of life we will live. We can stay in autopilot and at the end of our days feel like we’ve missed it all. Or, we can choose to let the power of God’s word and life clear out the garbage and live. What choice will you make? Timestamps[00:00] – Admitting the exhaustion of trying to be the “strong one”.[03:37] – Identifying the struggle of trying to find your own answers.[04:12] – How your brain keeps you stuck in dark places.[12:37] – The prayer: “God, why am I believing what is hurting me?”.[15:41] – The “Kitchen Moment”: Choosing to live after loss.
