Reno Dads Podcast Episode 25: Corona Check In

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 25: Corona Check In

In this episode, we get on the “Zoom Happy Hour” bandwagon. It’s no BBC sing along or surprise Hamilton appearance, but better late than never, right?! RenoDads founders Mike and David, along with long time contributors Josh and Jake, as well as newbie Steve talk about dad life in the current pandemic environment.

Dave’s got a new article that he’s plugging, and Josh puts us all to shame with the number of projects he’s getting done in his backyard (side note: when this social distancing thing goes away, we’re ALL invited to his place!). Then Mike previews an article he’s writing on taking his family on hikes to visit all of the hillside letters in the area, and Jake reminds us that maintaining some balance is kind of important when it comes to your mental health, especially during these circumstances. It’s been a while since the dads have gotten together, so there’s really no telling what might come up — latest binge-watching, best James Bond movies (and actors), Harry Potter, the psychology of instant gratification, among other unrelated topics…

Oh, and we all miss sports.

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 24: My Worst Day as a Dad #DadFail

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 24: My Worst Day as a Dad #DadFail

In this episode, we get a bit more “real” with our experiences as dads. Scott and Josh are in the studio to talk about their “not ready for Facebook” experiences — the ones that really make you question your own dad skills and whether or not you’re cut out for this whole “being a dad” thing.

Scott recently published a story about his very worst day as a dad, and it is worth a read. Aside from the very frightening account of his daughter’s accident (thankfully, there was no lasting effect from the fall), Scott described his feelings of inadequacy and embarrassment — and thinking that he might be the only dad around with these feelings of failure. When he expressed this sentiment to the rest of the Reno Dads recently, we all assured him that he was definitely not alone. We all started recounting our own #DadFail moments, and that led to a plan to have the discussion on the podcast! Josh’s #DadFail moment is also a good example of how frustrating some moments of fatherhood really are.

Bottom line: it’s okay to question your dad skills from time to time. We’re all learning on the job, and there’s no universally accepted way to approach these challenges, and it’s okay to ask your dad squad if you’ve got questions!

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 23: arte italia and NeoRealismo

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 23: arte italia and NeoRealismo

In this episode, we get to hear about a hidden gem here in Reno, arte italia. Hiding out in plain site on the corner of California and Flint, a few blocks away from the Nevada Museum of Art, it is arguably among the best Italian heritage foundations in the entire United States!

This month (and for the rest of 2019), they’re welcoming an incredible exhibit of photographs that provide a look at life in Italy from the 1930s, when Mussolini came to power, through 1960, in the aftermath of WWII: NeoRealismo: The New Image in Italy. Executive Director, Kristen Avansino provides a colorful history of the organization, and how she discovered this collection of photographs. Once she saw it in New York City, she says she just knew she had to bring it here to Reno.

The exhibit features some 110 prints — primarily vintage photographs — captured by more than 50 Italian photographers, paired with the original magazines, photobooks, and newspapers in which they circulated. These are curated from private collections and on view exclusively at arte italia from September 27 through December 29, 2019.  The display also includes film excerpts by such notable directors as Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini, and Luchino Visconti, alongside related movie posters. — arte italia website

The history of the building the arte Italia currently occupies is definitely worth learning about, as well. We hope you’ll take the family out to the exhibit and see just how special this local program is, and how lucky we are to have it right here in Reno.

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 22: Reno 1868 FC Assistant Coach Chris Malenab

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 22: Reno 1868 FC Assistant Coach Chris Malenab

Editor’s note: This story deals with the subjects of depression and suicide. If you, or anyone you know, is experiencing suicidal thoughts, you can contact the National Suicide Hotline by phone (1-800-273-8255) or text (send HOME to 741741).

In this episode, Jake Wiskerchen and host Jonathan have a conversation with Chris Malenab, an assistant coach with the Reno 1868 FC, who survived a suicide attempt in January of 2019, and is out telling his story. He’s using his own experience to meet with people and talk to them about mental health and how to prevent suicide.

    Mental Health: Removing the Stigma

Chris is a dad and he’s been a coach in the league for six years, four with Sacramento and this, his second year with Reno. Listening to him talk about his mental health is something that we hope will encourage our listeners and readers to talk openly about their own. Jake, of course, as a licensed family therapist, has a strong opinion about just how important it is to address the things in our lives that cause us to feel one way or another. Unfortunately there’s still a stigma attached to seeking help in the form of therapy or other forms of psychiatric treatment. Especially among men. Jake’s on a mission to create a space where everyone can be as open and vulnerable as Chris – when you need help, go out and find it. Even when things are “okay”, it’s a good idea to check “under the hood” and have a conversation with a professional about your emotional well being.

Chris says that the 1868 FC organization was there to support him, and made sure that he could openly talk about his mental illness and that his team was there to make sure he knew he could count on them, on and off the field.

September 10, 2019: World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day, and here at Reno Dads, we want you to know that you’re not alone. If you feel like you need to talk to someone, there are always places you can turn, like the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention, or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. There is even an effort by the FCC to create a national emergency number like 911

We really hope that you give this episode a listen. a href="https://www.rgj.com/story/sports/2019/07/01/reno-1868-fc-assitant-coach-advocates-mental-health-after-suicide-attempt/1506902001/" target="_bla...

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 21: Traveling with Kids

In this episode, Jake Wiskerchen and David Bradfield recap some of their advice in how to travel with kids, inspired by Jake’s latest article, Tips for Traveling with Kids. And from the archive, David’s article with travel tips from a former CIA officer. Shout out and special mention of the “Mile-High Blowout” article from Scott, as well!

As you might imagine, our conversation hardly stayed on just travel tips, since, well, it’s us. Road trips, teenage drivers, airport bans, and a whole host of other topics come up in our podcast. We hope you’ll have a listen and send us some feedback. Also, don’t forget to leave us a rating in the iTunes Podcast store!

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 20: Dairy Farmer Daniel Perazzo

Reno Dads Podcast Episode 20: Dairy Farmer Daniel Perazzo

In this episode, the Reno Dads podcast sat down with dairy farmer Daniel Perazzo of the Perazzo Brothers Dairy Farm (Fallon, Nevada). We’re always looking for interesting people in our community to chat with, and the Nevada Dairymen suggested we sit down with Daniel to learn more about family farming. We talk about life on the farm, raising kids – Daniel has four daughters and a son, and how dairy is helping to feed the world!

Daniel’s family has been in the dairy business for four generations. He told us about growing up on the farm and how his dad passed down his love of caring for the animals and how he’s teaching his kids about how the farm operated and how to care for the cows.

There’s a lot to learn about what goes into keeping a family dairy farm running, and getting the story from a dad like Daniel is really the second best way to do it. Probably the BEST way is to go and see the farm for yourself. The Perazzo Brothers invited our Reno Dads readers (and listeners) to get in touch with them to set up a tour. They even have a museum that tells the history of family dairy farming in Nevada. Seems like a fun family trip! You can find Perazzo Brothers at 6555 Stillwater Road,Fallon, Nevada 89406 or call them to schedule a tour at (775) 423-6556.
