What does it really mean to be lukewarm in your faith? Most people have heard the term lukewarm Christian, but the meaning goes much deeper than spiritual passion or church attendance. In Revelation 3, Jesus speaks directly to the church of Laodicea and delivers one of the most sobering warnings in all of Scripture. He tells them He is about to spit them out of His mouth, not because they are imperfect, but because they are inauthentic. Laodicea was one of the wealthiest cities in the ancient world. It had a powerful banking industry, a famous textile trade, and a world-renowned school of medicine known for its healing eye salve. But the city had a water problem. Nearby Hierapolis had healing hot springs, and Colossae had cool, refreshing mountain water. Laodicea had neither. Their water arrived lukewarm and useless. Jesus used this as a picture of their spiritual condition. He did not want them to be spiritually cold. He wanted them to be either healing or refreshing to the people around them. Using the three major industries of Laodicea, Jesus identifies three patterns that still show up in the church today. The banking industry points to the tendency to create emotional and spiritual distance rather than dealing with hard things. The textile industry points to the habit of covering up sin and struggle rather than bringing it to God for real cleansing. The medical industry points to the danger of spiritual blindness, treating outward appearances while ignoring what God is trying to reveal on the inside. Wealth had become a mask for the Laodiceans. Their self-sufficiency had crept from their finances into their faith. They said they had everything they needed, but Jesus said they were wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. This is the danger of cultural Christianity. Behavior can change enough to look different on the outside without any real transformation happening on the inside. But even after this hard diagnosis, Jesus does not walk away. He stands at the door and knocks. He is not standing there with arms crossed. He is pleading. And the sobering reality is that He is saying this to people who are already inside the church, already going through the motions, already singing the songs. He is on the outside, asking to be let in. This message is for anyone wrestling with questions like: Am I really following Jesus or just going through the motions?
